Hartwick Rolls to Victory at Cazenovia

CAZENOVIA, NY- Hartwick used a 7-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to break a 3-3 tie and came away with a 17-7 victory over Cazenovia on Sunday afternoon. The win gives the Hawks a record of 4-2 overall, while the Wildcats fall to 2-3.

It was the Wildcats who struck first when Cory Tilton scored to give Cazenovia the early 1-0 lead with just under 10 minutes left in the first quarter. The Hawks answered with a Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) score at 9:16 and followed that with Harry Hughes' (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) first goal of the day as the Hawks went ahead 2-1 at 7:13. Cazenovia tied it and the two teams exchanged goals with the score tied 3-3 after one period of play.

The second quarter belonged to 'Wick as it scored six times in the frame to pull ahead 9-3 at halftime. Five different Hawks scored as the Wildcats had no answers to the Hartwick offense.

The Hawks' run continued into the third quarter when Hughes found the back of the net at 11:39 for his fourth goal of the game and Hartwick went ahead 10-3. The Wildcats finally halted the Hawks' scoring streak with a goal of their own from Wes Lawrence. It was too little and too late for Cazenovia as the 'Wick offense would not let up as it outscored the Wildcats 4-1 in the period to lead 14-5.

Hartwick scored three straight times in the final quarter to surge ahead 17-5 with 8:01 left to play. Cazenovia scored the game's final two goals with the last one coming at 4:46 to complete the scoring.

Hughes had a big game as he totaled five goals on the afternoon. Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) tallied four scores. Ciolino, Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset), and Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) both scored twice. Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) and Joe Pellegrino (Oakdale, NY/Connetqout) had one goal each.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) got the start in goal to pick up the win. He stopped eight shots. Matt Hin (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place), Matthew Galvin (Medway, MA/Medway), and Michael Rourke (Long Beach, NY/Long Beach) all saw action and did not record any saves.

The Wildcats were led by Lawrence's three goals. Tilton, Joe Delia, Kyle Kingsley, and Vincent Halsey all scored once. Delia added three assists. Pat Boyle had 18 saves for Cazenovia in goal.

The Hawks had sizable leads in shots (45-20) and in ground balls (45-30). Hughes, Cooper, Bobby Cassidy (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside), and Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/Moriches) all scooped up a team-high five groundballs each. Max Cooper (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had four caused turnovers.

Hartwick will next face Castleton State on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
