Shorter Surges with 8-0 Run for Victory at Centre

DANVILLE, Ky. -- Shelby Beverly scored three goals and visiting Shorter used a run of eight straight goals to upend host Centre College, 10-8, in non-league women's lacrosse action on Sunday morning in Kentucky.

The Lady Hawks won their second straight and fifth out of their last six outings to improve to 8-3 on the year. Centre dropped to an even 5-5 on the season, as it could not withstand a Shorter flurry that spanned from 8:02 remaining in the first half until 10:11 remained in the game.

Shorter trailed 5-2 after Centre's Jacqueline Anderson scored with 8:43 left in the first half, but a goal by Aiste Pranciliauskaite 41 seconds later sent Shorter on what would essentially be a game-clinching push.

For the next 28:53 of match time, Shorter rattled off eight consecutive goals to take a commanding 10-5 lead.

Avery Armstrong and Beverly followed up Pranciliauskaite's tally in the first half to tie the game at 5 heading into halftime. Armstrong then began Shorter's second half onslaught with a goal 10 seconds into the final period, and Mia Wiggins sandwiched a pair of goals around a Beverly strike while Katie Ott capped the run with a goal at the 10:11 mark of the second half to put Shorter ahead 10-5.

Centre scored the game's final three goals, but the five-goal advantage proved too much for the hosts to overcome, and despite being outshot 19-11 in the second half, Shorter was able to hold on behind six big second half saves from goalie Taylor Moody. Moody finished with 14 saves in 60 minutes.

Wiggins and Armstrong scored twice each for Shorter, which was outshot 38-21 and won despite turning the ball over 33 times.

The Lady Hawks made the most of opportunity, however, holding Centre to just better than 50 percent in clear opportunities (5 for 8), winning 10 of 19 draws and capitalizing on its one man-up chance while holding Centre without a goal during its power play opportunity in the second half.

The Lady Hawks return to action on Wednesday, March 27 when they travel to Reinhardt for a 5:00 pm start.
