RIT Has Streak Snapped by Nazareth in One-Goal Loss

ROCHESTER, NY -- RIT (5-2) had its three-game winning streak snapped with a 9-8 loss to Nazareth (3-4) in non-conference action at RIT's Turf Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) and Sage Sarkis (Honeoye Falls, NY/Honeoye Falls-Lima) each scored three goals for RIT, while Holly Leone (Centerport, NY/Harborfields) added two goals. Ally Meile (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) added an assist, while Megan Henriksen (Silver Spring, MD/Our Lady of Good Counsel) had four ground balls and three draw controls. Katleyn Crane took the loss in net, making seven saves.

Alyssa Johnston led Nazareth with five goals, Megan Cregan, Amy McIntosh, Brooke Sullivan and Carly Gates each scored goals for the Golden Flyers who fired 26 shots. Tara Prosak picked up the win in net, making 14 saves.

RIT held a slight 27-26 shot advantage, while Nazareth held a 22-19 ground ball edge. The Tigers were 18 of 20 on clearing attempts, while Nazarteth was 18 of 19. The Golden Flyers were 3 of 6 on free position attempts, while RIT went 2 of 8.

Tied 3-3 at halftime, Sarkis and Vakiener scored two quick goals for RIT, giving the Tigers a 5-3 lead on Vakiener's 29th goal of the season with 25:04 to play.

Johnston answered right back for Nazareth, scoring consecutive goals, tying the score at 5-5 with 21:21 to play converting a free position attempt.

Sarkis and Leone tallied consecutive goals midway through the second half, taking a 7-5 lead on Leone's second of the game with 15:55 to play in regulation.

Nazareth took the momentum back, scoring four straight goals, taking a 9-7 lead on a free position attempt by Johnston. She scored two of Nazareth's four goals in that stretch.

Sarkis scored with 1:14 to play to cut the Nazareth lead to 9-8, but Nazareth took possession on the ensuing draw and ran out the clock handing RIT it's second win of the season.

RIT returns to action on Friday, March 29 when the Tigers open Liberty League play versus Bard College at 4:00 pm on RIT's Turf Field.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior Alyssa Johnston scored four of her five goals in the second half Tuesday as visiting Nazareth squeaked out a 9-8 victory over RIT in a non-conference game on RIT's Artificial Turf Field.

Nazareth improved to 3-4 overall, while RIT dropped to 5-2. The Golden Flyers open their Empire 8 Conference schedule Friday at home against Alfred at 4:00 p.m.

Tuesday's game was close throughout with neither team leading by more than two goals. The Golden Flyers used a four-goal flurry over a five-minute stretch late in the second half to turn a 7-5 deficit into a 9-7 lead. Johnston initiated the run with an unassisted score with 9:29 left. Senior Megan Cregan and sophomore Brooke Sullivan each added unassisted goals as Nazareth took the lead for good at 8-7.

Just :32 after Sullivan's goal, Johnston added her fifth goal of the game and team-leading 20th goal of the season on a free-position shot with 4:02 to go to make the score 9-7.

RIT's Sage Sarkis scored her third goal of the game with 1:14 to go to trim Nazareth's lead to 9-8, but Nazareth goalie Tara Prosak saved a free-position attempt by Sarkis with :56 left to preserve the one-goal advantage and the Golden Flyers were able to run out the remaining seconds. Prosak finished with a season-high 14 saves.

The game was tied 3-3 at halftime as the Golden Flyers got goals from Amy McIntosh, Carly Gates and Johnston.

RIT, which had a 27-26 edge in shots, also got three goals from senior Shelby Vakiener and two from Holly Leone. Nazareth had a 22-19 edge in ground balls. McIntosh and freshman Kayla McKay each had three ground balls.
