No. 15 Lakers Sink the Rock in PSAC Opener

ERIE, Pa.- No. 15 Mercyhurst beat Slippery Rock, 20-10, on Tuesday afternoon. Kayla Minner led with a career-high seven goals and Anna LeGrett dished out a personal-best seven assists in the PSAC opener at Tullio Field.

The game was physical, with many fouls and four yellow cards doled out. The Lakers wasted little time taking the lead, trying to put The Rock away early. LeGrett scored 48 seconds in and then assisted on a Minner goal with 25:20 left in the first half.

LeGrett scored again with 22:50 remaining for a 3-0 advantage. Rebecca Himes found Hannah Corton for a goal soon after and then Minner finished an Alisha Catalino pass for a 5-0 lead at the 19:01 mark.

Morgan Pettit attempted to get SRU back into the game, scoring two straight goals to make it a three-goal game. Himes assisted on a Corton score and then Minner converted a free position shot for a 7-2 margin. Pettit answered with back-to-back goals again, cutting the lead to three.

With 8:40 to play, LeGrett hit Brittany Tucker for a goal. Himes passed to Catalino, who scored two minutes later. After a Rock goal, Himes finished a LeGrett assist for a 10-5 advantage. Catalino scored from LeGrett with 4:10 left and the Rock scored late in the frame, sending the teams into the break with Mercyhurst ahead, 11-6.

The Lakers had another strong start in the second period. Minner scored from Catalino twice in the first 5:24 of the half. The Rock scored twice to make it 13-8, but Corton hit Minner for another goal at the 15:12 mark. Slippery Rock on a free position attempt, but Minner assisted on a Catalino goal and then LeGrett hit Himes for a score and 16-9 lead at the 11:07 showing on the clock.

Another Catalino score stretched the lead. After a Rock goal, Minner scored off a LeGrett assist. Corton and Catalino each scored in the final minute, giving Mercyhurst a 20-10 conference victory.

Minner recorded seven goals and two assists, while LeGrett had two goals and seven assists. Catalino posted five goals and three helpers and Himes had two goals and three assists. Corton added a hat trick and an assist. Rebecca Muscella made three saves in net.

The Lakers outshot The Rock, 31-14, and picked up 24 ground balls to 14 for the visitors. SRU turned the ball over 25 times in defeat.

Mercyhurst improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the PSAC. It hosts #13 Bloomsburg in another conference match on Saturday, March 30. The contest is scheduled for a 3:00 p.m. start at Tullio Field.
