No. 5 Merrimack Uses Stingy Defense to Stun No. 1 Le Moyne

The Dolphins answered back with an extra-man goal of their own with 3:54 to play. Sophomore midfielder Alec Westerhoff (Lagrange Park, Ill./Lyons Township/Bridgton Academy) scored his sixth goal of the year off a pass from senior attackman Tyler Prevost (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart/Onondaga C.C.) 31 seconds into a one-minute unnecessary roughness penalty.

The Warriors won the ensuing face-off and were able to push their lead back to two 40 seconds later as Brett Axelson scored off a pass from Melaugh.

Le Moyne won the ensuing face-off, but immediately turned the ball over to the Warriors. After Merrimack ran one and one-half minutes off the clock, Axelson committed a turnover and the Dolphins cleared the ball into their offensive end. However, Reagan made his 24th and final save to end the comeback bid.

Senior goalkeeper Jeff White (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius HS) made 10 saves in between the pipes in suffering his first career loss when allowing five or fewer goals (47-5 career record). Reagan earns his second career win against the Dolphins after earning the victory in Merrimack's 7-6 win in the NE-10 semifinals on May 6, 2011. Le Moyne finished the game with a 50-32 advantage in shots, but Merrimack had a 21-14 edge in the second half.

Le Moyne (7-1, 4-1 NE-10) looks to restart its NE-10 win streak on Saturday against Saint Anselm at 11:00 a.m.
