Marksberry Sets Record as Wolves Rout Mountain Lions

NEWBERRY - Seven different Newberry players scored in the Wolves' 16-1 victory over the Mountain Lions of Young Harris.

The Wolves (5-6) started the scoring early as freshman Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) corralled a pass from sophomore Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) and netted the first goal of the evening. Newberry doubled its total less than 30 seconds later as freshman Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.) notched her first goal of the game.

Young Harris (1-12) snagged the draw control after Marksberry's first goal, before turning the ball over and soon fouling the Wolves setting up a free position opportunity for junior Kerri Ann Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.), which she calmly converted for her first goal of the evening.

The two squads exchanged turnovers for the next four minutes, until sophomore Elise Sanchez (Tujunga, Calif.) fed Baxtrom for her ninth goal of the season. With 20:10 remaining on the clock in the first half, Marksberry tied the Newberry record for career points as she assisted Thomas' first goal of the game to put Newberry ahead of the Mountain Lions 5-0.

Newberry extended its lead with a pair of goals within ten seconds of each other as sophomore Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) scored off an assist by Barlage, before Barlage controlled the following draw and went straight to goal for her 23rd of the season.

The next 12 minutes saw neither team find the back of the net, until at 6:49 Barlage scored again to put Newberry up 8-0. Kenny tallied Newberry's ninth goal of the evening with 4:26 left in the first, before Barlage again scored with 3:36 remaining to put Newberry ahead 10-0.

Newberry started the second half much the same as they started the first half as Barlage scored off an assist from Marksberry only two minutes into the period. Marksberry's assist at the start of the second half clinched her sole possession of the career points record at Newberry.

Six minutes later Young Harris answered with its lone goal of the game, before freshman Noelle Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) netted her 16th goal of the year. After Newberry battled through a Young Harris offensive attack, a caused turnover followed by a ground ball by Thomas resulted in the sophomore's second goal of the evening.

Marksberry struck again with 12:10 remaining for the Wolves' 14th goal of the night and her 17th of the season. As was the case at the end of the first half, neither team was able to get much offense going for a long period of time as ten minutes ticked off the clock before Kenny scored off an assist from junior Kristin Balish (Manassas, Va.). Balish joined the scoring party a few seconds later as she scored Newberry's final goal of the evening off an assist from sophomore Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.).

Newberry freshman Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) notched eight saves in goal for the Wolves, while Barlage led the scoring with five goals. Thomas snagged eight ground balls, four draw controls and caused six turnovers on the evening.

Newberry continues its homestand on Friday as the Wolves host Lees-McRae at 4:00 p.m.
