Assumption Rally Falls Just Short in Loss to Franklin Pierce

Worcester, Mass. (March 26) -- Trailing 12-9 with under five minutes remaining, Assumption cut the lead to one with 30 seconds left but came up just short in a 12-11 loss to visiting Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 action at the Multi-Sport Stadium.

The Ravens struck quickly in the opening minutes and held a 2-0 lead just 2:30 into the first on goals from Kevin Dargin and Eric Harries. Assumption got on the board just 1:20 later as sophomore Peter Gersbeck (Wading River, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) notched his third goal of the season.

Dargin pushed the lead back to two with a man-up goal for the Ravens, but back-to-back goals from Assumption's Garrett Smith (East Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse Minoa) tied the game for the first time at 3-3 early in the second quarter.

Assumption kept up the pressure in the second and eventually took the lead at 6-5 with 2:58 left on an unassisted score from sophomore Mike Jednak (Franklin, Mass./Franklin). The Ravens sent the game into the half deadlocked at 6-6 though as Dargin scored as the horn sounded for his fourth goal of the half.

The teams traded man-up goals to start the third and the game remained tied at 8-8 with 11:57 left in the period. Over the rest of the third and early in the fourth, Franklin Pierce slowly gained the momentum and built the lead up to 11-8 with 12:13 left in the game on a goal from sophomore Erik Kelly.

Assumption's Smith and Pierce's Kelly traded goals and the Ravens still led by a three-goal margin with just 4:25 left. Smith tallied his sixth goal of the game and 15th of the season with 1:12 left to get the Hounds within two, followed by the sixth goal of the season from sophomore Tim Casey (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) to pull Assumption within 12-11 with 30 seconds remaining.

The Hounds won the ensuing faceoff and called timeout, but were unable to get the equalizer as they fell by a one-goal margin for the second straight game.

Smith led the Hounds with six goals, while junior Ian Mack (Avon, Conn./Avon) finished with two goals and four assists. Senior Connor MacNeil (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) posted two assists, while sophomore Dillon Riviezzo (Huntington, N.Y./St. Anthony's) led the team with seven ground balls. Sophomore Will Contento (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) and junior Matt Palubicki (Scituate, Mass./Scituate) combined for nine saves, while Contento picked up the loss. Don Denman made seven stops for the Ravens in the victory.

With the loss, the Hounds fall to 0-6 overall and 0-4 in Northeast-10 play, while the Ravens improve to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
