Nazareth Starts Fast, Holds on to Down Utica

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored six of the game's first seven goals and then held off a third-quarter charge by Utica Wednesday as the Golden Flyers defeated the Pioneers in Empire 8 play, 14-8.

Freshman Troy Haefele scored three goals and sophomore defenseman A.J. Small had eight ground balls and six caused turnovers as the Golden Flyers improved to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the Empire 8. Utica is 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference action.

Nazareth led 3-1 after one quarter and 8-2 by halftime. Utica, however, scored five times in the third quarter and once early in the fourth to close to within 10-8. Nazareth notched the final four goals of the game to pull away.

Juniors Collin Clark and Chris Aycock each scored two goals as did sophomore Kyle Fanning and freshman Luke Wooters, who leads the team overall with 22 goals and 29 points. Clark, Aycock and junior Trevar Haefele each added two assists.

Fanning scored his first goal of the season in the first quarter, then the Haefele brothers each scored for a 3-1 Nazareth lead. Troy Haefele scored two more times in the second quarter to raise his season total to 15, while Aycock, Wooters and Fanning also scored.

Nazareth extended its lead to 10-3 early in the third quarter after long-stick Jonathan VanOrden and Clark scored just 24 seconds apart. Utica, however, rallied to score five goals in a row, including a pair of man-up tallies to climb within 10-8 with 13 minutes left.

Nazareth responded with goals by Clark, Wooters, Drew Simoneau and Aycock to close out the Pioneers.

Nazareth had a 45-32 advantage in shots and a 44-26 edge in ground balls. Simoneau won 12 of 21 faceoffs and collected nine ground balls. Freshman Scott Brown played all 60 minutes in goal and had five saves. For Utica, Justin Edelstein and Corey Thompson each scored two goals and goalie Andrew DiOrio made 18 saves.
