Privateers' Comeback Falls Short at Mount St. Mary

NEWBURGH, N.Y. (March 27, 2013) Maritime lost to conference opponent Mount St. Mary, 12-10, on the road Wednesday night at the Knights' Synthetic Turf Field. The Privateers fall to 3-8 (0-2 Skyline) in defeat, while MSMC improves to an even 4-4 (1-1 Skyline).

Senior Matt Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) and freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) both recorded hat tricks and Kelly added two assists to match the team-high five points with senior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), who had two goals and three assists. Freshman Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) led all players with 11 groundballs and senior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) made six saves on the night.

The game was a tale of two halves for Maritime, as the Privateers trailed 7-1 after one half of play. Sophomore Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) scored the only goal for Maritime in the opening 30 minutes and it came with Mount St. Mary ahead 6-0. Classmate Nick Schneider (Rocky Point, N.Y./Rocky Point) picked up the assist on the tally.

In the second half, the Knights would score first to advance their lead to 8-1, but the Privateers found the back of the net six straight times in just over five minutes to bring the game to within one goal at 7:25 of the third. Messina, Winter and Kelly all scored two goals apiece during the stretch.

The Knights would respond with three-straight, two late in the third quarter and one early in the fourth, to build the lead back up to 11-7. Maritime tried to rally back and scored three of the next four goals (Messina, Schneider and Kelly) but eventually came up short.

MSMC was led by senior Andrew Pullen, who recorded six goals on the night, while juniors Matt O'Donnell and Stephen White both had two tallies each. Sophomore goalie Connor Haran made 14 saves and also picked up a team-high seven groundballs.
