Wesleyan Dominates in First-Ever Meeting with Dominican

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (March 28) - Meeting for the first time, Wesleyan jumped out to a 6-0 halftime lead with six different goal scorers, then had five more players join the goal-scoring parade in the second half en route to a 13-4 home victory over Dominican (NY) here today.

Wesleyan is back in action Sat,. March 30 with another non-conference game at Babson, while Dominican host Nyack in a conference battle Wed., April 3 in its next start.

Junior Maddy Coulter got things going for Wesleyan at 25:10 of the first half with a bouncer from the left side past Charger goalie freshman Brittany Kiernan, who finished with 11 saves as Wesleyan held a 32-15 margin on shots. Before the end of the half, sophomores Caty Daniels and Leah Sherman, along with junior Abby D'Angelo, senior Lydia Kring and freshman Emily Gretsky added goals to pad the Cardinals' margin to 6-0.

The Chargers got as close as 7-3 midway through the second half as sophomore Allison Southwick and freshman Christina Brennan both scored on free-position shots and junior Brianna Blank scored from right in front on a well-positioned pass by Brennan.

Southwick netted her team-leading 15th goal of the campaign. When Brennan added another free-position goal with 3:56 to go, it gave her the team lead in points with 20 on 10 goals and 10 assists. Before the final Dominican goal, however, Wesleyan tacked on three more from freshman Martha Harding, Gretsky and sophomore Audrey Le to give Wesleyan a 10-3 lead.

Freshman Hannah Plappert had opened Wesleyan's second-half scoring to make it 7-1 at 20:43. Her second goal of the game was sandwiched by goals from freshman Isabelle King and sophomore Anna Michalowski as the Cardinals picked up the game's final three markers for the 13-4 score.

In the Wesleyan goal, freshman Nina Labovich recorded six saves. D'Angelo proved to be the Cardinals' top point-getter in the game with a goal and two assists. In total, 13 Cardinals got in on the scoring with a goal or an assist.
