Catawba Holds off Florida Southern for One-Goal Win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba built a three-goal margin in the third quarter and held off a late rally by visiting Florida Southern to post a 10-9 win in Deep South Conference action on Thursday at Shuford Stadium. The Indians improve to 4-6 overall and 2-3 in the DSC, while the Moccasins fall to 3-7 and 1-4.

The teams went to the break tied at 4-4, but the Indians scored three times in just under two minutes during the third quarter to build a 7-4 edge. John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington) got the first goal at the 6:09 mark of the quarter then during an non-releasable man-up situation, Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll) and Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Gettysburg) took turns on assisting on each others goals for the 7-4 edge with 4:36 to go in the quarter.

The Moccasins pulled within 7-6 early in the fourth quarter on a tally from Brian Weil (Middletown, NJ) only to see Catawba answer with two goals to go up 9-6 with 9:37 remaining. Down 10-7 inside the final minute, Florida Southern made a final push.

Chris Murphy (Murrysville, PA) scored with 31 seconds left and Weil tallied another with 17 seconds remaining to pull the Moccasins within 10-9. Daniel Rew (Forest Hill, MD/Bel Air) won the ensuing face-off and the Indians ran out the clock.

Ridolfo and Cory Losselyong (Lewisville, NC/W. Forsyth) each had two goals and an assist in the win for Catawba. Cullop had a goal and two assists, while Scheich and Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic) each had a goal and an assist. Rew won eight of his 12 face-off tries.

Dane Sorensen (Victoria, BC) led Florida Southern with four goals and an assist. Weil scored two goals, while Murphy and Shane Tompkins (Bear, DE) had a goal and an assist. Logan Muether (Hilliard, OH) recorded seven saves.

Florida Southern held a 43-27 edge in shots, including an 18-6 advantage in the fourth quarter. Catawba's Christian Klimczyk (Linthicum, MD/Cardinal Gibbons School) made seven of his 15 saves in the final quarter for the Indians.

Catawba will host Rollins in another Deep South Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
