McCaffer's 10 Goals Lead Warriors to Rout of Alvernia

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Junior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) became the third Lycoming player ito score 10 goals in a game, and the Warriors cruised to the largest win in five years, beating Alvernia, 19-2, in the Commonwealth Conference opener for both teams at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Thursday, March 28.

McCaffer finished one goal shy of the school record of 11 goals set by Dan Wilcox against Neumann in 2003, as he notched two goals in the first quarter, four in the second, three in the third and one on a man-up goal in the fourth quarter.

He also added an assist, with his 11 points tied for the seventh-best performance in school history. The 11 points were the most for the Warriors since Dave Kirschner set the school record with 14 points against King's in 2003.

The Warriors (2-6 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) scored four goals in the first quarter and six in the second as Lycoming built a 10-0 halftime lead while outshooting the Crusaders (4-6 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth), 32-9.

The Warriors also scored the first five goals of the third quarter before Daniel Frantz finally got Alvernia on the board with 6:20 left in the third. Lycoming added four more goals before Alvernia's Rick Reid capped the scoring with a goal with 6:57 left in the fourth quarter.

Sophomore Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning Painted Post West) notched five goals, four assists and four groundballs and freshman Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added two goals and a career-high five assists for the Warriors. Senior Matt Doherty (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) added a career-high three assists and junior Steve Campaniello (Rochester, N.Y./Gates-Chili) added two assists.

The team also forced 11 turnovers, with sophomore defenders Thomas Hanson (Tuscon, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) and Joe Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) leading the way with two each.

Alvernia goalkeeper Brandon Weaver stopped 15 shots and added a team-high four groundballs. Frantz posted four caused turnovers.

Sophomore goalkeeper Alex Wylly (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) stopped 10 shots for the Warriors to earn the win. Junior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./Lansdowne) played the fourth quarter, making four saves and allowing one goal.

The Warriors get back on the field on Saturday, March 30, when they head to Elizabethtown for a 1:00 p.m. Commonwealth Conference game.

Williamsport, Pa. (Mar. 28, 2013) - Lycoming (2-6, 1-0) opened up a 10-0 lead at halftime on its way to a 19-2 win over Alvernia (4-6, 0-1) Thursday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference action at Lycoming.

The Warriors got 10 goals from Matt McCaffer. Alvernia got tallies from Dan Frantz (Lansdale, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) and Rick Reid (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner). Brandon Weaver (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) made 15 saves in net for the Crusaders.

Alvernia returns to action Wednesday evening when it hosts Albright College at 7:00 p.m.
