Crusaders Rally to Down Warriors

READING, Pa. Sophomore Casey Maguire (Egg Harbor Township, N.J.) and senior Brooke Strausser (Myerstown, Pa./Conrad Weiser) each notched three goals to lead to Lycoming, but Alvernia rallied in the second half to post a 13-9 win at the Schlager Memorial Turf Field in both teams' Commonwealth Conference opener on Thursday afternoon, March 28.

Maguire also added an assist to lead the team with four points, while Strausser also added three groundballs and two draw controls for the Warriors (3-5 overall, 0-1 Commonwealth).

The two teams entered the second half tied at four, but Alvernia (4-4-1 overall, 1-0 Commonwealth) went on a 6-1 run in the second half's first 13 minutes to take a 10-5 lead.

The Warriors rallied back within two points with 12:49 left, as Strausser scored twice and Maguire added her third goal, but the Crusaders got the next three goals to regain its five-goal lead before Strausser closed out the scoring with 2:47 left.

Lycoming took a 3-1 lead in the first half after two goals by Maguire in the first 10 minutes and a score by sophomore Sarah Quigley (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) added a score with 6:07 left to keep a two-goal lead, but Alvernia scored twice within 47 seconds with less than three minutes left to tie the game at the break.

Senior Lindsay Schilling (Woodbine, Md./South Carroll) added five ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior Hope Pappas (Upper Darby, Pa./Upper Darby) scooped up four ground balls to lead the Lycoming defense. Sophomore Erin Cieniewicz (Shillington, Pa./Governor Mifflin) added six draw controls.

Alyssa Verrillo led the Crusaders with five goals, an assist and six draw controls and Allison Bainbridge added three goals and an assist. Nora Walsh scooped up five ground balls.

Senior Lauren Reitnouer (New Holland, Pa./Garden Spot) made 14 saves in goal for the Warriors and Victoria Kearn stopped 13 shots in the win for the Crusaders.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, April 3, when they host No. 16 Messiah at 4:00 p.m. at the Shangraw Athletic Complex.
