Denver Rallies in Second Half to Down San Diego State

SAN DIEGO San Diego State got off to a great start on Friday afternoon but couldn't keep up the pace in the second half, as the Aztecs lost to Denver, 13-9, at Aztec Lacrosse Field.

Sophomores Lauren Maack, Grace Korandovich, Bailey Ewing and Sophie Koubek scored two goals apiece for SDSU (6-3, 2-1 MPSF), while Korandovich recorded four draw controls and senior goalkeeper Sammy Slattery finished with 10 saves.

SDSU led, 4-1, after Koubek scored two goals within nine seconds in the first half, and Ewing's unassisted goal with 8:26 to go before halftime put the Aztecs on top, 6-3. Sandwiched in between was junior Meris Walsh's goal off a nice pass from junior Christina Ricciardulli, as SDSU was in good position to win its fifth-straight game.

However, Denver closed the first half on a 3-0 run to knot the score, 6-6, at halftime, and the Pioneers outscored the Aztecs 7-3 after intermission. A score by Korandovich off a pass from junior Isabelle Pickett pulled the Aztecs within two, and Bailey Ewing's unassisted goal cut Denver's lead to one, 10-9, with 15:44 left to play.

But Denver (10-1, 2-0) scored the final three goals to close the game, including two by sophomore Jill Remenapp, to seal the victory. Remenapp finished with four goals, two assists, two groundballs and two caused turnovers, while sophomore Rachael Dillon scored three goals, sophomore Kiki Boone recorded five draw controls and sophomore goalkeeper Hannah Hook had nine saves.

Denver finished with 13 more fouls than the Aztecs (30-17), and also had an 8-3 edge in draw controls in the second half, as the Pioneers were able to run out the clock late in the game.

The Aztecs return to action next week in Columbus, Ohio. SDSU takes on Detroit on Monday, April 1, beginning at 4:00 p.m. ET, before facing Ohio State on April 3, at 7:00 p.m. ET.
