No. 2 Mercyhurst Pulls Away to Defeat Wheeling Jesuit

ERIE, Pa.- No. 2 Mercyhurst scored three goals in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to pull away from Wheeling Jesuit, winning 15-7 on Saturday afternoon. Jake McAndrew and Zac Reid each scored three times in the ECAC win at Tullio Field.

The game went back and forth for much of the day until the Lakers came up with a dominant fourth quarter to pick up their 28th straight regular season win-the longest string in Division II.

Wheeling scored the first two goals of the game, but Mercyhurst responded with three scores to close the first period. Trevor Vargo finished an Ian Brooks pass with 8:40 left. James Chayka scored a few minutes later and then Brooks gave the hosts the lead with 66 seconds to play in the frame.

In the second quarter, Reid scored 2:01 in to expand the advantage. After a Cardinal goal, McAndrew found Brian Scheetz for a goal. Another Wheeling score made it 5-4, but Deven Alves assisted on a McAndrew goal with just under two minutes left in the half.

Mercyhurst appeared ready to put the game away early in the third. McAndrew and Reid each scored in the first 1:22 and then Brooks added another goal with 9:20 to play, giving the Lakers a 9-4 margin. The Cardinals rallied though, scoring three straight goals to pull within 9-7 heading into the fourth quarter.

The home team showed why it is one of the best in Division II at the start of the final period. Beginning in a man-up situation, Reid hit McAndrew for a goal 13 seconds in. Mitch McAvoy won the ensuing faceoff, sprinted in, and scored seven seconds later for an 11-7 lead. Chayka picked up the next ground ball and then found Ryan Sullivan for his first goal of the season with 14:30 showing on the clock.

Mercyhurst was not done, however, as Chayka assisted on Reid's third goal at the 13:10 mark. Alves found Chayka for a score a few minutes later and then Scheetz picked up the assist on McAndrew's hat trick score.

McAndrew and Reid each had three goals and an assist. Chayka had two goals and two helpers, while Brooks had two goals and an assist. Scheetz totaled a goal and two assists. Michael Grace made 11 saves in net.

The Lakers used a 39-29 advantage in shots and won 19-24 faceoffs.

Mercyhurst is now 8-0 in 2013 and will play at Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday, April 2. The Lakers have won 28 in a row in the regular season and 17 consecutive regular season home outings.
