Winthrop Tops Campbell for First-Ever Big South Win

ROCK HILL, SC – Freshman Shannon Gallagher scored five goals as the Winthrop lacrosse team earned its first-ever Big South victory 15-10 over the Campbell Camels Saturday at Eagle Field.

The Eagles improved to 7-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Big South, earning the team's first-ever winning streak. Campbell fell to 5-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

“This was a good team effort to get the win today,” head coach John Sung said. “We have to continue to work to put teams away when we get a big lead. Once we find that switch we will be able to get to the next level.”

Winthrop notched the first goal of the contest 1:51 into the game as freshman Claire Feeney netted her 22nd goal of the season on a feeder from Alyssa Blevins. Campbell tied the contest less than two minutes later.

The Eagles netted consecutive goals from freshmen Hayley Krause and Shannon Gallagher to go up 3-1 before the Camels got within 3-2 with 17:44 left.

After the Campbell goal, the two teams went scoreless for nearly 12 minutes until Mary Accomando grabbed her first of three tallies on the afternoon with 5:58 on the clock in the first half. Gallagher grabbed her second of game less than a minute later to put the Eagles up 5-2.

Campbell battled back with three goals in less than three minutes to tie the contest at 5-5 with 1:49 left in the first half. Winthrop closed the first half in a big way, scoring three goals in the last 1:39 of the half, two from the stick of Gallagher and one from freshman Logan McCarthy to take an 8-5 lead into the break.

The Camels grabbed the first goal of the second half with 27:31 on the clock followed less than a minute later by Gallagher, netting her fifth goal of the season. Alyssa Blevins put the Eagles back up four at 10-6, but Campbell stayed close with a tally 46 seconds later to get back within three.

With the three goal lead the Eagles then scored five unanswered goals, two from Logan McCarthy, two from Mary Accomando and one from Alyssa Blevins to go up 15-7 with 9:33 left in the game. Campbell tried to crawl back into the game, getting three goals, but couldn't overcome the deficit as the Eagles won 15-10.

Shannon Gallagher finished with five goals on nine shots and also had four draw controls. Mary Accomando and Logan McCarthy each added three goals. Danielle Ellis finished with three assists. Hayley Krause continued to dominate the center circle, grabbing eight draw controls.

“Mary Accomando played huge today,” Sung said. “With Campbell focusing so much defensive effort on Megan Wallenhorst, Mary picked up that missing piece today. She's got previous playing experience and you can see her transitioning into that experienced leader that we need her to be.”

Winthrop finished with 40 total shots to Campbell's 23. The Eagles continued to dominate teams on the draw, winning the draw controls 18-9.

The Eagles will head on the road for a conference contest Monday when Winthrop faces Presbyterian at 6:00 p.m.

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop snapped Campbell's four-game win streak Saturday at Eagle Field in a 15-10 Big South match. The Camels move to 5-3 on the season and fall to 0-2 in the conference.

"We are disappointed with the outcome," head coach Phil Schuman said. "We had too many self-inflicted wounds to overcome in order to get a victory today. This is a good teaching moment for our young squad."

Campbell scored five times in each half for a total of 10. With just under two minutes to go in the first half, junior Cloey Henchcliffe scored her second goal of the day to tie the game at five, the only time Campbell erased the Winthrop lead. The Eagles scored three times in just over a minute to push the score to 8-5 before halftime.
