Furious Cyclones Comeback Leads to Victory at DeSales

FLEMINGTON, N.J. (March 30, 2013) Centenary College improved to 7-0 on the season with a huge 14-12 comeback victory over DeSales University this afternoon on the road.

The Cyclones fell behind early after Lance Bracale put DeSales up 1-0 not three minutes into the opening quarter. After a Robert Nuzzolese (Woodbury, NY, Syosset) goal tied the game at one apiece, the Bulldogs countered with back-to-back goals to make the score 3-1 with 8:28 remaining in the opening quarter.

The back and forth action would continue when Cameron Gunn (Johnson City, NY, Johnson City) found Jeff Prudente (Somerville, NJ, Somerville) at 5:29 for his 17th goal of the season to make it a one goal game. However, DeSales answered with a Ryan Loughlin goal to re-establish the two-goal lead.

On a man-down opportunity, the Cyclones would again make it a one goal game when Gunn found the back of the cage to make the score 4-3 at 3:50 of the opening quarter. However, from that point forward DeSales would go on a run scoring six of the next seven goals to take a dominating 10-4 lead.

Trailing 10-4 late in the second quarter the Cyclones would not throw in the towel, as goals from Nuzzolese and Gunn brought Centenary back to within four goals as the game entered the half. The late surge would set the tone for the rest of the game.

Coming out of half time the Cyclones continued to play with the same grit and determination they ended the first half with and quickly got to work. Gunn continued his hot game and got the scoring started in the third quarter with a goal at 12:55. He then followed that goal up with a man-up goal to cut the deficit to two goals.

With the momentum pendulum clearly swinging in the Cyclones favor, Centenary College received a goal from Nuzzolese and two goals from Conor Nolan (Hillsborough, NJ, Immaculata) to battle back and take an 11-10 lead with 5:39 remaining in the third quarter.

The roaring come back forced DeSales to take a time out and regroup following the go-ahead goal. However, the timeout did little to slow down the Centenary College rampage as Gunn added on yet another goal to give Centenary a 12-10 as the final seconds ticked off the clock in the third quarter.

Come the fourth quarter, the Cyclones extended their lead when Nuzzolese beat the DeSales goalie to make the score 13-10. On the ropes, the Bulldogs finally answered when Josh Martin scored DeSales' first goal since the second quarter to cut into the Cyclones lead.

The two teams would exchange goals in the final minutes to round out the scoring, but the furious Cyclones comeback from late in the second quarter on proved to be the difference in the game. As the final seconds ticked off the clock the Cyclones held on for the 14-12 come from behind victory in a season-defining victory.

The Cyclones received huge offensive offensive contribuations from Nolan who scored his 200th career point (2G, 4A), Nuzzolese (5G) and Gunn (6G, 3A) while defensively goalie Kevin Switzer (Hillsdale, N.J., Pascack Valley) made 10 saves in three quarter of work.

With the win the Cyclones remain undefeated on the season. Centenary College will now turn their attention to a CSAC showdown with #12 Cabrini College this Wednesday at 3:00 pm at Cyclone Field.
