St. John Fisher Sinks Hartwick in Empire 8 Opener

ROCHESTER, NY- Hartwick played a tight first half in its Empire 8 opener with St. John Fisher but the Cardinals broke off a 6-0 run in the second half to defeat the Hawks 12-7 on Saturday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The loss evens Hartwick's record at 4-4 and drops them to 0-1 in the Empire 8 while the Cardinals improve to 7-2 and 1-0 in the Empire 8.

Hartwick took a 2-0 lead midway through the first quarter. At 8:51, Mike Vaglica (Newton, MA/Newton North) fed to Cody Ciolino (Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) who deposited the ball past Cardinal goaltender Jamie Campagna to put the Hawks ahead 1-0.

Two minutes later, Vaglica fought through a crowd of defenders to work his way up to the goal and scored to give Hartwick a 2-0 advantage. Fisher came right back with two scores to tie the game up at 2-2 after the first period of play.

The Hawks regained their two-goal lead in the second quarter. Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) scored with 13:17 showing on the game clock to push 'Wick ahead 3-2. Vaglica then added his second score of the game to increase the Hawk lead to 4-2.

The Cardinals offense started to heat up as they scored four times to go up 6-4 at 4:07. The Hawks would narrow the gap to one goal with 1:33 left to play in the quarter and trailed 6-5 at halftime.

The third quarter was all Fisher as it shutout the Hawks in the frame and outshot them 13-4. The Cardinals scored four times to lead 10-5 heading into the final quarter of play.

Fisher picked up where it left off in the third with two more goals to increase its lead to 12-5 at 7:37 of the fourth period. Hartwick would finally snap its scoreless drought when Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) slipped a shot past Campagna to make it 12-6.

Following a penalty on the Cardinals at 3:49, the Hawks would take advantage on the man-up opportunity when Ciolino dished out to Roy Simmons (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) who scored to close the Hawk deficit to 12-7 with 3:24 left on the clock. Both defenses played tough for the remainder of the game as neither team could get off a shot and the Cardinals came away with the win.

Vaglica scored three goals and added an assist for the Hawks. Ciolino, Dupuy, and Simmons all scored once. Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, Ny/Lynbrook) started in goal and stopped 10 shots.

The Cardinals were paced by Jeff Wester and Greg Ramsden who both scored three times. Joe Gaug had a pair of scores. Nick Rossi, Bryan Dyer, Ryan Freiji and Brian Cole scored once each. Campagna has seven saves in goal.

Fisher led in shots 37-23 and in ground balls 31-18. Jake and Max Cooper (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) both scooped up four ground balls to lead 'Wick. The Cardinals dominated on face-offs where they won 20 to just three for the Hawks.

Hartwick returns home to face Utica on Wednesday afternoon. Game time at Wright Stadium is at 4:00 p.m.
