Purple Knights' Comeback Bid Falls Short at Assumption

WORCESTER, Mass. - Saint Michael's scored a pair of goals in the final 3:01 to pull back to within one before falling to Assumption, 14-13, in Northeast-10 Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Assumption's Multi-Sport Stadium. The Purple Knights drop to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the league after the defeat, while the Greyhounds improve to 6-4 and 3-3.

Junior Crystal King (South Burlington, Vt./South Burlington) finished with a career-high seven points and five goals while adding a pair of assists for Saint Michael's, and sophomore Kate Boyer (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) equaled her career high with three goals. Classmate Hannah Beardsley (Essex, Mass./Manchester Essex Regional) scored twice.

Sophomore Courtney Piper (Wolfeboro, N.H./Brewster Academy) added a goal and an assist. Junior Shannon Murphy (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional/UMass) had a goal and five draw controls, and sophomore Melissa Jaskiewicz (Kensington, Md./Bethesda-Chevy Chase) notched a goal.

Junior Claire Martin (Mattapoisett, Mass./Bishop Stang) recorded six ground balls, sophomore Taylor Midgley (Hampton, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) had four and first-year Casey Curtin (Waltham, Mass./Ursuline Academy) made eight saves.

Sophomore Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) recorded three goals and two assists for Assumption, while classmate Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) notched three goals and an assist. Senior Michelle Santos (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) totaled three goals, and classmate Steph O'Rourke (Amherst, N.H./Souhegan) converted a pair. Three other players had one goal, while junior Michelle Monahan (Deer Park, N.Y./Deer Park) stopped 12 shots.

After Santos scored twice for the Greyhounds, the visitors scored five of the next six, including a pair from Boyer, during a 7:25 stretch to grab a 5-3 advantage with 8:27 remaining in the opening half. Assumption closed the frame with two more goals in the final 8:03 to knot the score at 5-5.

Neither team was able to string together consecutive goals in the second half's opening 12:26, as the Greyhounds scored 6:05 into the period before King answered for the Purple Knights with a marker 4:34 later. King found the back of the net following each of the next two Assumption goals before the hosts netted three unanswered goals to move in front 11-8 with 15:01 left to play.

Saint Michael's scored three of the game's next five markers to trail 13-11 with 5:17 remaining before the hosts increased their lead to three with 3:47 to play. Boyer and King found the back of the net with 3:01 and 1:19 remaining, respectively, to cut the deficit to one, but Assumption held the Purple Knights without an attempt at an equalizer for the remainder of the contest.

Saint Michael's plays next on Wednesday when it faces Merrimack College in a 7:00 p.m. away meeting.
