Vakiener Scores Seven as RIT Beats Vassar

ROCHESTER, NY -- Senior midfielder Shelby Vakiener (Fairport, NY/Fairport) scored a game high seven goals as RIT (7-2, 2-0 Liberty League) defeated Vassar (5-1, 1-1 Liberty League) 13-11 in Liberty League action at Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

Vakiener led all scorers with eight points on seven goals and an assist. Ashleigh Caruso (Liverpool, NY/Liverpool) and Marlee Vlassis (Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse Minoa) each scored a pair of goals and had an assist, while Carly Augustyn (Spencerport, NY/Churchville-Chili) had a goal and an assist. Katelyn Crane (Palmyra, NY/Palmyra-Macedon) picked up her seventh win of the season, making seven saves.

Katherine Stegman, Phoebe Tzannes and Dara Davis each scored two goals for the Brewers. Isabelle Goldstein and Sophia Rosetti each had a goal and an assist on the afternoon, and Katharine Pula took the loss in net for Vassar, making seven saves.

Shots were even at 22 apiece, while Vassar held a 23-17 ground ball advantage. Each team went 17 of 19 on clearing attempts. RIT was 3 of 5 on free position attempts, while the Brewers were 2 of 4.

Vassar controlled play early in the first half, taking a 5-2 lead with a three-goal run, capped off by an unassisted goal by Rosetti with 11:40 to play in the opening half.

Consecutive goals by Vakiener at 10:36 and 4:47 of the first half cut the Vassar lead to 5-4, which the Brewers took into halftime.

Caruso opened the second half scoring for RIT with her 15th goal of the season off an assist from Augustyn, tying the score at 5-5.

After a Stegman goal gave the Brewers a 6-5 lead, RIT and Vakiener rattled off three straight goals, taking an 8-6 lead with 16:12 to play in the second half. It was RIT's first lead since early in the first half.

Dara Davis broke the Tigers run with her 19th goal of the season with 14:52 to play in regulation, that goal pulled the Brewers to within a goal at 8-7.

Vlassis scored two straight goals at 13:24, and 12:26 respectively, giving RIT a three-goal lead at 10-7.

Vassar got a goal from Tzannes with 9:52 to play off a free position attempt, cutting the Tigers lead to 10-8.

Vakiener tallied her sixth of the game with 9:14 to play off a nice drive to the net, giving the Tigers an 11-8 lead.

After a Malena Harrang free position goal cut RIT's lead to 11-9, goals by Vakiener and Caruso increased RIT's lead to 13-9, the Tigers largest lead of the game.

Vassar scored late goals by Stegmann and Elizabeth Annis to make it 13-11 RIT. But time ran out for a Vassar comeback.

RIT returns to action on Friday, April 5 when the Tigers travel to Union College. First draw is a 4:00 pm in Schenectady, New York.
