#5 Merrimack Wins Fourth Straight; Downs Saint Rose

ALBANY, NY The #5 Merrimack men's lacrosse team stayed hot on Saturday afternoon as they defeated Saint Rose on the road by the score of 19-2 for their fourth straight victory. Greg Melaugh (Billerica, Mass.) led the Warriors offense with five goals on the afternoon.

The Warriors put the game away with a 12-0 scoring run from the midway point of the second period until 6:39 left in the fourth period. #5 Merrimack (4-1, 3-0 NE-10) will stay on the road for a conference game against Franklin Pierce on Wednesday, April 3 at 3:00 p.m.

"We got a great overall team effort this afternoon," said head coach Mike Morgan. "I thought we played really well on both sides of the ball, faceoff's and in transition. The offense hit their stride today and our defense was strong, holding them to only two goals for the game. This is the consistency we are going to need the rest of the way."

Six Warriors finished the game with at least two goals and four Warriors recorded at least two turnovers. Melaugh led the way for the Warriors as he finished with a season-high five goals. Paul Jones (Guilderland, NY) closed out his impressive game with three goals and two assists while leading scorer Corey Lunney (Little Silver, NJ) scored three goals. Jamie Shand (Massapequa, NY) continued his solid play for the Warriors with a season-high four points, two goals and two assists, while Tim Towler (Topsfield, Mass.) scored two goals and scooped up a team-high five ground balls.

Merrimack opened up the first period with two goals from Melaugh to take the early advantage after one period of play. The Warriors expanded their lead to 5-0 less than three minutes into the second period as Lunney scored twice and Jones scored his first of the game.

After the Golden Knights finally broke through with their first goal of the game with 11:06 to play in the second, Melaugh scored two more goals including one on the man up opportunity to give Merrimack the 7-1 halftime lead.

The Warriors opened up the third quarter with a quick strike from Shand after a nice pass from Mike Perdie (Wading River, NY). The Warriors closed the period out on an 8-0 run to take the dominating 15-1 lead. Kyle Guilbert (Walpole, Mass.) picked up his first goal of the season in the third after a perfect pass from Ryan Poirier (Warwick, RI).

Guilbert and Towler scored back-to-back goals to open the final period before Evan Helming broke the 12-0 scoring run for the Warriors with the Golden Knights second goal of the game, making the score 17-2. Trevor Gallagher (Simsbury, CT) scored his first career goal late in the fourth after a nice pass from his brother, Paul Gallagher (Simsbury, CT). Brett Axelson (Cazenovia, NY) closed out the scoring for the Warriors in the fourth on the man up with the assist going to Jones, his third of the season.

For the game, Merrimack outshot their opponents 46-27 while also dominating the ground balls battle by the score of 46-28. Merrimack dominated the faceoff battle, winning 19 of 23 faceoffs. Patrick Coskren (Norwell, Mass.) dominated in his faceoff opportunities as he won 13 of 14 draws on the afternoon and scooping up a team-high eight ground balls.

Steve Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) came off the bench for the Warriors and scooped up three ground balls while Scott Corcoran (Haverhill, Mass.) and Connor Whittemore (Walpole, Mass.) each finished off their afternoon with two ground balls. Connor Reagan (East Lyme, CT) was solid in net for the Warriors as he picked up his fourth win of the season after allowing only one goal and making eight saves in three periods of action. Morgan Green (Portsmouth, RI) saw action in the fourth period and finished the game with four saves and only one goal allowed.
