Drexel Escape Aggies' Upset Bid

PHILADELPHIA -- Despite three goals and two assists for a game-high five points by senior Elizabeth Datino, UC Davis was unable to protect an early 5-3 lead over Drexel, falling by a 9-7 final in action at Vidas Field Saturday afternoon.

The Aggies slip to 3-7 for the year. The Dragons, ranked 31st in this week's LaxPower.com power rankings, improve to 7-3 overall.

In addition to Datino's hat trick, senior Hannah Mirza tallied two goals while sophomore Meghan Jordan and senior Stephanie Guercio each added one. Sophomore goalkeeper Kai Murphy tallied eight saves. For Drexel, senior attacker Alyse Maiden matched Datino's goals output while Kelli Joran and Alissa Watts chipped in two apiece.

The two squads battled in a relative defensive struggle early on. Jordan put UC Davis on the board with her goal in the sixth minute, then Watts equalized with her eight-meter goal four minutes later. Mirza and Dragon midfielder Kristin Kopenhaver traded scores in the 19th minute to set the board at 2-2 before Watts gave Drexel its first lead on a goal with 8:59 remaining in the half.

Datino then figured on each goal of a 3-0 UC Davis run. She scored on an eight-meter attempt in the 26th minute, assisted Mirza in the 28th then fired in an unassisted strike with 34 ticks left in the half, giving the Aggies a 5-3 lead. Jordan halved the UC Davis margin in the waning seconds before the break.

Maiden and Datino exchanged goals to keep the Aggies up by one early in the second, but the Dragons scored four of the game's next five goals the rest of the way.

UC Davis had opportunities to comeback down the final stretch, missing on a flurry of four shots during the 52nd through 54th minutes. Mirza notched a steal against Watts with 3:36 remaining but the Aggies were unable to convert on the opposite end.

UC Davis resumes Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play with a road tilt at Denver on April 7.
