No. 10 Stevens Overpowers Alfred in E8 Opener

ALFRED, N.Y. (March 30, 2013) No. 10 Stevens rolled to a 22-8 victory over Alfred on the Empire 8 Conference opener for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Merrill Field. Stevens improves to 7-2, 1-1 overall and hands Alfred (6-1, 0-1) its first loss of the season. Twelve different Ducks scored at least one goal in the victory.

The Ducks dominated Alfred, the nation's top scoring offense and second best defense in Division III, in every facet of the contest. Stevens never trailed in the showdown and were only tied at 2-2 and 3-3 with the Saxons before rolling off six straight goals to put the game out of each just 3:48 into the second quarter.

Alfred entered the tussle averaging 19.8 goals per outing while surrendering just 4.4 through six games.

Freshman Austin Boyd (Bellevue, Wash.) picked up his first collegiate victory in cage for the Ducks with seven saves in 60 minutes of action. Saturday's game marked the second contest in which Boyd has seen action for Stevens and faced 38 shots from the Saxons.

Stevens tallied the first two goals to kick off the game from freshman Griffin Rock (Bay Shore, N.J.) and senior Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) in the opening minute of the first quarter. Rock found the back of the net just 31 seconds after the opening faceoff on a pass from junior Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.). Just 20 seconds later, senior Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) found Dorne for a 2-0 lead.

Alfred posted back-to-back goals by the 11:43 mark before the Ducks regained the lead at 3-2 on an unassisted score by freshman Zachary Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) for his first collegiate tally.

Two minutes later, the Saxons knotted the game back up at 3-3, but Stevens went on its 6-0 run from the 2:11 mark of the first 15 minutes up to 11:12 remaining in the second period. During the run, Philippi netted two of his game-high five goals on the day and picked up his second assist for seven total points in the game.

The Saxons ended the run with two scores just eight seconds apart to bring the contest back to a 9-5 difference, but Stevens would once again push its lead back out to seven with three more goals before the half. Alfred had the last say in the second quarter, scoring with 2:09 left and went into halftime down, 12-6.

As the second half got underway, Alfred registered the first marker of the third quarter with 10:48 to go, only to watch the Ducks rip off 10 consecutive goals over the next 19:26 of game time to make the difference, 22-7. The Saxons ended the 30-goal outburst with 34 seconds left in regulation to put a stop to the Ducks' streak.

Stevens outscored Alfred, 10-2, in the second half and won 9 of 13 faceoffs.

Rock recorded three goals for the Ducks, while Dorne, senior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.), junior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) and freshman Anthony Raposo (Tewksbury, N.J.) all netted two scores. Z. Raposo, juniors Sean Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.) and Connor Lynch (Seaford, N.Y.), sophomores Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Michael Frasco (Spring Lake, N.J.), and freshman Connor O'Shea (Ridgewood, N.J.) all added one goal.

Dupras finished the game with five points, while A. Raposo scored the first two goals of his career.

Freshman Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) went 16 for 27 at the faceoff "X" and picked up 11 groundballs to lead all players, while sophomore Brian Fahy (Eastchester, N.Y.) scooped up six groundballs and caused four turnovers.

Stevens will be back at home on April 6 at 1:00 p.m. for another Empire 8 match-up against St. John Fisher College. The Ducks lost to Fisher, 15-12, in the regular season last year but bounced back to drop the Cardinals, 11-5, in the Empire 8 semifinals.
