2nd Half Comeback Erased; Carthage Tops Pacific in OT

TACOMA, Wash. An intense second half comeback for Pacific was neutralized in overtime Saturday, as Carthage outscored the Boxers 3-1 in overtime for a 15-13 win in action at the University of Puget Sound's East Field.

The Lady Reds (4-4) used a six-goal run through the middle of the first half to build a 9-3 halftime lead, but the Boxers responded to outscore Carthage 9-3 in the second half, four off the stick of Kaitlyn Harper (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.) and tie the contest at 12-12. Carthage scored three goals off of just four shots in the overtime to take the win.

Harper led the Boxers (5-4) with five goals, all in the final 36 minutes, to go along with two assists, seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. Carmen Taplin (Sr., Hillsboro, Ore.) and Kelly Stevens (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) each scored three goals while Amy Mayhugh (So., Tigard, Ore.) scored two. Pacific outshot Carthage 30-25 and had a 22-21 edge in ground balls.

Sydney Whitaker led Carthage with four goals. Olivia Nino, Lauren Chatham, Andrea Wambaugh and Maya Varma each scored four goals.

After the two teams traded goals over the first three minutes of the contest, the Lady Reds went on a run of six unanswered goals. Whitaker scored the first two goals of the rally and Chatham capped it with her goals off Natalie Ceis' assist with 9:53 to go that gave Carthage a 7-1 lead. Stevens and Taplin ended the run with a pair of goals, but the Lady Reds scored the final two goals of the stanza to give Carthage the 9-3 lead.

Pacific came out of halftime with a renewed fire on the offensive end, scoring the first three goals of the period over the first nine minutes, two by Harper. After Whitaker gave the Lady Reds their first second half goal with 20:22 to go, the Boxers scored a pair of free position goals to come within 10-8 at the 16:40 mark.

Carthage built their lead back to 12-8 in a goal by Nino with 8:01 left, but the Boxers rallied to score four goals over the final six minutes of the period. Steven scored the tying goal off of a Harper assist to send the game to overtime.

The extra period belonged to the Lady Reds. Whitaker scored just 20 seconds into overtime and Chatham tallied with four minutes left for what became the game-winning goal. Wambaugh added an insurance goal with 3:02 left and Harper added the final goal with 53 seconds left.

Stephanie Carter (Fr., Applegate, Ore.) took her first loss of the season for the Boxers in goal, making one overtime save while playing the final 17 minutes of the game. Starting goalkeeper Brittany Hartmann (Sr., Portland, Ore.) made four saves while playing 49 minutes. Ali Gorman made 10 saves in her fourth win in goal for the Lady Reds.

Pacific returns home to Lincoln Park Stadium on Thursday as they host Puget Sound. The game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m.
