Undefeated Denison Downs Oberlin

Oberlin, Ohio An inspired effort by Oberlin was not enough to upend the conference-leading Big Red of Denison as they came into Fred Shults Field and earned a 16-7 win over the Yeowomen on Tuesday night.

Sophomore Kate Hanick led the spirited Oberlin effort with a season-high three goals to go along with a one assist. She also led the team with a five ground balls and five caused turnovers. Rookie Grace Barlow added two goals in the game to run her team-leading total to 15 on the year.

The Big Red opened up a 7-0 lead before Sarah Andrews would put Oberlin on the board, finishing off an assist from Ilyssa Meyer with 8:26 left in the first half. Just over three minutes later, Meyer would add her second helper of the game on Barlow's finish that made it an 8-2 game.

Denison scored the final two goals of the half and netted one more to start the second session to go up nine, but the game was much closer in the second half as the Big Red only out-scored Oberlin by one, 6-5, over the final 30 minutes of play.

An acrobatic finish by Hanick on a nice feed from Bronwen Schumacher would mark Oberlin's first goal of the frame, but the Denison would rip off four goals in a row to short-circuit any threat of a potential comeback.

Later in the stanza, Hanick would work her way through the Big Red defense for an unassisted score with 10:47 left before Oberlin would finish by scoring the last three goals of the game. Meyer cashed in an 8-meter attempt, while Hanick completed the hat trick before assisting on Barlow's final goal of the game with just four seconds left.

Denison had nine different players with at least one goal in the game. Molly Chapman paced the Big Red attack with three goals and four assists.

Oberlin returns to action on Saturday when it host DePauw University at 1:00 p.m.
