Privateers Rally from Down Seven to Win at Manhattanville

PURCHASE, N.Y. (April 3, 2013) Maritime found itself down 9-2 at halftime to a winless Manhattanville team Wednesday afternoon on the road, but the Privateers rallied back in the second half to claim a exciting 13-11 win. The Privateers improve to 4-8 on the season, while the Valiants fall to 0-9.

Freshman Tom Kelly (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) scored a man-up goal to get the Privateers on the board and tie the game at 1-1 early in the first quarter. Shortly after, he had a hand in junior Ed Fargo's (White Plains, N.Y./White Plains) tally that gave Maritime a 2-1 lead. However, the Valiants would score eight the next eight goals before halftime came and took a 9-2 lead into the locker room. Senior Nick Barbuto (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) recorded six saves in the opening half.

The Privateers scored the first three goals of the third quarter, as senior Kevin Winter (Brightwaters, N.Y./Bay Shore), junior Andrew Scalesi (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) and senior Matthew Messina (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) went back-to-back-to-back. Winter had an assist on Messina's tally. The Valiants added one more tally before the horn sounded to end the third with a 10-5 lead. Barbuto had five saves in the third quarter alone.

The teams traded goals to start the fourth quarter, as Manhattanville scored first before Kelly recorded his second goal of the game, which was assisted by sophomore Mike Gangarossa (Farmingdale, N.Y./St. Anthony's). Freshman Matt Hayes (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) scored just 30 seconds later off a pass by junior Mike Johnson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) to make the score 11-7.

Scalesi and Winter scored unassisted goals later in the quarter to bring the score to 11-9. Sophomore Daniel Ahern (Kings Park, N.Y./St. Dominic) then found the back of the net at 5:08 and Winter assisted on the goal. Then, with 3:19 to play, Winter scored his third goal of the game to tie the game at 11-11.

Messina scored the game-winner with 1:47 to go after a big save by Barbuto led to a successful clear opportunity. Hayes won the ensuing faceoff and Messina added an insurance goal to round out the scoring with 36 seconds remaining. Hayes led all players with 17 groundballs and was 20 for 27 from the faceoff-X. Barbuto ended the day with seven saves.

For the Valiants, Will Sahakian recorded four goals and an assist, while Connor Normandin added three goals and an assist. Goalie Dom Poletto made 19 saves in the losing effort.

The Privateers return to action on Saturday, April 6, when they will host Skyline opponent Kean University at 4:00 p.m. at Reinhart Field.
