Utica Outlasts Hartwick in Penalty-Filled Empire 8 Battle

ONEONTA, NY- In a game that featured 24 penalties, visiting Utica outscored Hartwick 5-1 in the second half to come away with a 10-6 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Wright Stadium. The loss drops the Hawks to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in the Empire 8. Utica improves to 5-3 overall and 1-1 in the E8.

Ben Winkler scored the first goal of the contest to give UC the 1-0 lead at 9:45 of the first quarter. Less than a minute later, Zack Stevenson found the back of the net to put the Pioneers up 2-0.

Following a penalty on Utica, the Hawks took advantage on the man-up opportunity when Irvens Dupuy (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) connected with Zach Gropper (Syosset, NY/Syosset) for the score to make it 2-1. After another Pioneer goal, Dupuy scored unassisted with just 15 seconds remaining in the frame and it was 3-2 UC after one period.

In the second quarter, man-up goals from Gropper and Harry Hughes (Holtsville, NY/Sachem East) tied and then gave Hartwick its first lead of the game, 4-3, at 10:12. Utica responded with two scores to pull ahead 5-4 at 3:14. Hughes scored his second goal of the day on an assist from Gropper at 1:03 to even the game 5-5 at halftime.

UC scored three times in the third quarter to move ahead 8-5 at 5:55. In the final frame, a penalty on Jake Cooper (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) gave Utica a man-up opportunity. Despite the disadvantage, the Hawks fought back as Hughes scored on a diving shot to get 'Wick to within two goals, 8-6, at 13:56.

With 9:23 remaining to play, the Hawks were looking to reduce their deficit but Mike Vaglica's (Newton, MA/Newton North) shot went high and a turnover by Gropper at 8:50 gave the Pioneers possession. Utica quickly brought the ball downfield where Winkler scored his fourth goal of the game to put UC ahead 9-6. Stevenson scored with 2:26 left to play to complete the scoring as Utica came out with the victory.

Hughes led Hartwick with three goals and added an assist. His three scores give him 171 goals for his career and he is now five away from topping Ian Ritcey to become Hartwick's all-time goal scorer.

Gropper added two goals and an assist. Dupuy finished with one goal and one assist.

Carl Lengel (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started between the pipes for the Hawks and had 11 saves. He also scooped up three ground balls and had one caused turnover.

Winkler led the Pioneers with four scores. Edelstein and Stevenson both tallied two goals. Joe Schoen and Trent scored once each. Andrew DiOrio stopped seven shots in goal for UC.

Utica led in shots 37-31 and in ground balls 25-23. Both teams won 10 face-offs. Cooper and Connor Hudson (Moriches, NY/Moriches) had four groundballs each to lead 'Wick. Hudson also won seven face-offs.

The Pioneers were 3 of 12 on the extra-man opportunity while the Hawks went 4 of 12. Both teams were whistled for 12 penalties.

Hartwick goes on the road Saturday to face Elmira. Game time will be at 3:00 p.m.
