McDaniel Scores Four of Final Five Goals to Edge Swarthmore

WESTMINSTER, Md. McDaniel scored four of the game's final five goals to defeat Swarthmore 10-9 in Centennial Conference action on Wednesday.

Julia Jacobs (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) broke a 9-all deadlock, scoring on a free-position attempt to lift the Green Terror (6-4, 2-1 CC) with 43.1 seconds remaining. Paige Messersmith (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) led the way, scoring four goals to go with four draw controls, four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Corinne Sommi recorded three goals and two assists to pace the Garnet (7-2, 2-1 CC), who dropped its first conference game of the season.

Trailing 8-6 on a Sommi-to-Emma Sipperly connection with 12:31 to play, Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) hit Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) 6:21 later to cut the deficit in half.

With 5:22 on the clock, Messersmith converted a free-position goal before Anna Beaudry (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) found the back of the net on an 8-meter shot 37 seconds later for a 9-8 lead.

Sommi needed just 30 seconds, converting off a pass from Annalise Penikis to knot the game at 9-all before Jacobs converted her team's fifth free-position tally of the night.

Parcell found Entrot 5:06 into the game to stake the Green Terror to a 1-0 lead before Beaudry hit Messersmith 4:14 later to double the advantage.

A Bridget Bopst (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) converted a free-position marker for a 3-0 lead with 15:54 to play in the opening half.

A Sommi unassisted tally and pair of Penikis solo runs knotted the game at 3-all entering the intermission.

Sommi gave Swarthmore its first lead of the game 32 seconds into the second half.

A Messersmith free-position tally with 26:32 to play evened the score once again before she wrapped around the cage and found the back of the net 24 seconds later for a 5-4 advantage.

Two Vanchieri markers around an Elyse Tierney tally turned the one-goal deficit into a 7-5 lead with 17:20 to play.

A Beaudry-to-Entrot connection 26 seconds later drew the hosts back within one.

McDaniel returns to action at No. 8 Franklin & Marshall on Saturday. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

WESTMINSTER, Md. In a close contest from start to finish, Swarthmore (7-2, 2-1 CC) fell to McDaniel (6-4, 2-1 CC) by a 10-9 score on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action from Gill Stadium.

Sophomore Julia Jacobs tallied the game-winning goal for the Green Terror off a free position shot with 43.1 seconds remaining in regulation. McDaniel scored half its goals from free position shots including four in the second half.

Junior Corinne Sommi led the Garnet offense with three goals and two assists in addition to two caused turnovers, ground balls and draw controls. Seniors Nicole Vanchieri and Annalise Penikis each finished with two goals and one assist.

Paige Messersmith of McDaniel led all scorers with four goals and finished with four ground balls and four draws. Five other players tallied for the Green Terror Danielle Entrot was the only other multi-goal scorer with two.

Lily Galzerano made eight saves between the pipes for McDaniel, while junior Michelle Ammerman finished with three stops and three ground balls in the contest.

The Garnet finished with a 26-25 shot edge and picked up 13 ground balls in the effort. The Green Terror held a 12-9 advantage in draw controls.

McDaniel opened the scoring at 24:54 with Entrot's first en route to a 3-0 advantage at the halfway mark of the first frame with goals from Messersmith and Bridget Bopst. With a quick regroup, the Garnet fired off the next three goals Sommi struck first and Penikis tallied two to knot the score at 3-3 entering the intermission.
