Rutgers Drops One-Goal Decision to Connecticut

Piscataway, N.J. (April 5, 2013) Despite putting 21 shots on goal, Rutgers women's lacrosse (8-3, 0-2) dropped a 8-7 decision to Connecticut (8-1, 1-1) on Friday afternoon at the RU Turf Field.

Redshirt senior midfielder Annie McGinley (Moorestown, N.J.), junior midfielder Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.) and freshman attack Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) each scored two goals apiece.

The RU defense, led by senior goalie Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.), allowed 13 shots, including just four in the second half. The Scarlet Knights caused 18 turnovers for the game, including four by redshirt junior midfielder Amanda Trendell (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.). Trendell also scooped up a team-high six ground balls.

Connecticut was led by Lauren Kahn with three goals. Katherine Finkelston added two scores.

After UConn earned the first score, Martinelli dished off to McGinley from behind the net to even the ledger at 1-1. UConn scored the next four goals to take a 5-1 lead with 14:03 to play in the first half.

Rutgers came storming back, posting four of the next five points to trail by just one, 6-5, heading into the break. Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.) started the spurt with a free position score before Barnes registered an unassisted goal on the run. After a Kahn free position goal, Martinelli dropped back-to-back tallies to pull the Scarlet Knights within one. Barnes knotted the score at 6-6 just six minutes into the second half. The teams traded goals before Kahn gave the Huskies an 8-7 lead at the 9:05 mark.

RU would have two opportunities including a long free position attempt by Barnes with three seconds remaining to find the equalizer in the last 1:22, but could not capitalize.

Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, April 7 to take on No. 5 Syracuse. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the RU Turf Field at the Stadium Complex.
