No. 9 Shoremen Corral the Mules

CHESTERTOWN, MD -- Bennett Cord (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) scored five goals and Michael Trapp(White Plains, NY/White Plains) went 15 for 17 on face-offs, scooped up eight ground balls, scored two goals, and assisted on another as ninth-ranked Washington College defeated visiting Muhlenberg, 13-4, in a Centennial Conference game this afternoon on Kibler Field at Roy Kirby, Jr. Stadium.

The Shoremen (9-1, 3-1 Centennial) dominated from the opening whistle as Trapp won the opening face-off and scored just eight seconds into the contest. Washington held an 8-1 lead after the first quarter and a 10-2 advantage at halftime. Cord scored four of his goals in the opening quarter on just four shots in the period.

Junior midfielder Hunter Nowicki (Baltimore, MD/Franklin) scored two goals to join Cord and Trapp as multiple-goal scorers for Washington. Senior attackmanMatt Lewis (Mt. Airy, MD/Glenelg Country School) added one goal and one assist. Junior goalie Ted DiSalvo (Boca Raton, FL/Spanish River) played the first 53:31 in goal for Washington and made 15 saves while allowing just three goals.

Jason Mertz scored two goals and assisted on another in the loss for Muhlenberg, while Jack Reilly scored one goal and had two assists. Jon Thomashad a goal and an assist for the Mules. Adam Schlauch played the first 49:18 in goal, making 17 saves and allowing all 13 goals.

Washington held a 56-31 advantage in shots, including a 35-9 advantage in the first half. The Shoremen also won the ground-ball battle, 42-29, and won 17 of the game's 20 face-offs.

The Shoremen return to action Wednesday with a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home game against Ursinus.
