Marist Dominates from Start to Finsh vs. Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Fresh off one of the biggest wins in program history, Siena failed to build upon the momentum as Marist dominated from start to finish in defeating the Saints, 13-4. Sophomore Julia Sirianni broke Siena's single-season record for draw controls in the loss.

Last Saturday Siena (2-9, 1-1) ousted five-time defending MAAC Regular Season Champion Fairfield 8-5, snapping the Stags' 30-game conference regular season winning streak. But with a chance to open MAAC play 2-0 for the first time in six years, the Saints squandered their opportunity.

Marist (5-8, 2-1) led 7-2 at the half and controlled throughout. The Red Foxes peppered the Siena cage for 32 shots, 22 of which they put on goal.

Jamie Romano tallied four goals for the Red Foxes, while Kirsten Viscount and Ashley Miller added hat tricks. Viscount also won six draw controls and Ashley Casiano was impressive in goal making 12 saves.

Sirianni, who entered the day needing just two draw controls to break Siena's single-season record, won five. The transfer from nearby Saratoga Springs, N.Y. who ranks 10th nationally in draw controls, broke assistant coach Lindsey Rosecrans' record of 53 set during the 2009 season.

Katie Maguire and Alyssa Treanor scored two goals apiece for the Saints, while Ashley Holdridge made nine saves for Siena which has lost seven of their last eight against Marist.

Siena embarks upon a three-game road trip Wednesday when they face defending MAAC Champion Canisius for a 7:15 p.m. tilt in Buffalo.

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. Coming off of a hard-fought lost at Fairfield on Wednesday, Marist came out on Saturday afternoon on a mission and controlled the scoreboard versus the host Siena Saints from the opening draw through the final buzzer.

After Kirsten Viscount (Smithtown, N.Y.) found the back of the net 84 seconds into the game, the Red Foxes would roll on their way to a 13-4 victory over the Saints to improve to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in the MAAC.

Jamie Romano (Kings Park, N.Y.) led three Red Foxes with hat tricks as the junior finished with four goals. Senior Ashley Miller (Montville, N.J.) and Viscount each accounted for three goals each. Junior Tierney Larson (Fairfield, Conn.) tied Marist's single-season record with a team-high three assists on the day.

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Casiano (South Windsor, Conn.) led a stalwart defensive effort with 12 saves and three ground balls.

The scoring on Saturday began fast as Viscount took a pass from Allison Gionta (Eastport, N.Y.) and netted the first goal of the game at 28:36. 30 seconds later, Viscount would put Marist up 2-0 over Siena with an unassisted marker.

After a Katie Maguire goal for Siena at 24:42, the Red Foxes would rattle off four unanswered goals; two each from Romano and Miller. In less than seven minutes of play, the game went from 2-1 to 6-1.

A trading of goals between 13:29 and 11:35 sent the game into intermission at 7-2. Viscount registered Marist's goal off of a Gionta assist.

Six saves by Casiano played an important role in the Red Foxes' five goal advantage. The senior made three of those stops off of free-position shots.

Any hopes of Siena coming out after halftime quick was quelled almost immediately when Larson found a cutting Amanda Tuck (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) for goal number eight on the afternoon just 22 seconds in.

A Siena goal at 28:29 made it 8-3 in favor of Marist. After 15 minutes of scoreless action, the Red Foxes began finding success with their patient, time-consuming possessions that would conclude with goals. Four different players netted scores between 13:05 and 6:58 for Marist: Gionta at 13:05, Romano at 11:32, Sabrina Mattera (Wantagh, N.Y.) at 8:05 and Miller at 6:58.
