Six-Goal Q3 Lifts No. 8 Stevens to Victory over St. John Fisher

HOBOKEN, N.J. (April 6, 2013) After a sluggish first half for No. 8 Stevens in which only two goals were scored, Stevens netted eight goals in the final 30 minutes to defeat St. John Fisher, 10-8, in an Empire 8 match-up. With the victory, the Ducks are now 8-2 overall and 2-0 in the E8.

St. John Fisher controlled the tempo throughout the first half and kept the Ducks to its lowest goal output this season in a half with two. Fisher took 20 shots to Stevens' seven and forced the Ducks into 13 first half turnovers.

Stevens scored the opening goal of the game at the 11:22 mark from senior Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.). Philippi took a feed from sophomore Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.) to stake the Ducks to an early 1-0 lead. That was the only goal Philippi would net in the contest but he did assist on three other scores. Maroon tallied the final two markers of the game for Stevens as part of his three-point afternoon.

Fisher responded with 5:39 left in the opening quarter on a man-up chance to knot the game at 1-1 on a goal by Nick Rossi which was assisted by Bryan Dyer. The Cardinals would then gain their first lead of the showdown just under three minutes later to wrap up the scoring in the first period.

Junior Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) scored his first of three goals in the game to open the second quarter on a man-up opportunity just 1:28 into the stanza. Philippi assisted on the equalizer which was the last goal of the half for Stevens.

Rossi picked up his second man-up goal halfway through the second quarter to put the Cardinals back on top, 3-2, and end the scoring in the first 30 minutes of action. Fisher slowed down the pace of the game in the first half and controlled the ball for over 10 minutes in the second quarter.

It turned out to truly be a tale of two halves after the teams came out of the locker room for the second half. The Ducks came out on fire and netted four goals over the first nine minutes of the period to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 advantage with 6:02 left in the third. Freshman Griffin Rock (Bay Shore, N.J.) was a catalyst for the comeback, as he netted a hat trick in the third quarter alone. Rock also picked up five groundballs in the game.

Rock registered the first goal of the quarter, unassisted, 1:30 in the period, and then Philippi and senior Rich Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J.) picked up two more unassisted scores to give Stevens its largest lead of the game at that time, 5-3. Rock capped off the four-goal run on the second Philippi assist.

Fisher answered with two goals of its own to make the game a one score differential at 6-5 with just over three minutes remaining in the period. Rock and Cronin put the Ducks back ahead by three, 8-5, in the final minute of the quarter for each of their hat trick scores.

As the fourth quarter got underway, Fisher once again fought back with two early tallies to make the score 8-7 with just over nine minutes to play in regulation. Maroon then took a pass from senior Harrison Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) at the 5:03 mark to make it a 9-7 game, but the Cardinals came right back with 2:36 to go. Maroon added the insurance goal with 1:11 left in the game on Philippi's third assist which resulted in the final score of the contest at 10-8.

Sophomore Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) earned his seventh victory of the season with seven saves between the pipes. Deiner played all 60 minutes for the Ducks.

Freshman Jeff Wyckoff (Summit, N.J.) paced Stevens at the faceoff "X" with 13 wins in 21 tries and also scooped up a team-high five groundballs.

The Ducks will host Utica College on April 13 at 1:00 p.m. from another Empire 8 showdown before two road games at Elmira College and Nazareth College the following week.
