Early Deficit Dooms Swarthmore in Loss to Gettysburg

SWARTHMORE, Pa. Swarthmore College (3-6, 1-2 CC) fell to Centennial Conference opponent Gettysburg College (6-4, 2-1 CC) by a 12-6 score from Clothier Field on Saturday afternoon.

Senior Wes Marcik and freshman Braeden DeWan each finished with two goals in the effort for Swarthmore. Sophomore Andrew Preiser tallied one goal and two assists and sophomore Ian Lukaszewicz fired off his 14th goal of the season.

The Bullets controlled the game early finishing with six opening half goals to Swarthmore's one to hold onto the victory. Robby Maddux lead all scorers with three goals and three assists and Evan Thomas and Martin Manillia each collected two goals and one assist.

Between the pipes, Garnet keeper Jonathan Cohen made nine saves in the complete game and J.T. McCook collected six saves for the Bullets.

Bobby DeWees, Jimmy Morris and Robby Maddux gave Gettysburg an early 3-0 lead with 5:56 to play in the first period. DeWan responded 40 seconds later with Swarthmore's first and only tally of the half, good for his sixth on the season. Gettysburg put two more on the board in the second period including Maddux's second of three in the game.

At halftime, the Bullets led 6-1 with a 17-5 shot advantage and committed just one turnover in the opening 30 minutes of action. Swarthmore held a 5-4 faceoff edge and finished the game winning 12 of 22.

The third period saw the most scoring with Preiser tallying at 13:15 for Swarthmore followed by two goals from Gettysburg. Marcik tallied his first of two at 4:55 in the third to set the score at 8-3, but the Bullets responded with two more to close out the frame.

The Garnet turned up the heat in the final frame, outscoring the visitors 3-2, which included three goals over two minutes from Marcik, Lukaszewicz and DeWan to reflect an 11-6 score with 8:03 remaining. The Bullets held the Garnet scoreless for the remainder and added a tally from Bobby Distler to complete the victory.

Swarthmore will travel to McDaniel College on Wednesday, April 10 for a 7:00 p.m. Centennial Conference start.

SWARTHMORE, Pa. Sophomore Robby Maddux (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) piled up three goals and a career-high three assists and Gettysburg found its way back into the winning column with a 12-6 Centennial Conference victory at Swarthmore Saturday afternoon.

The Bullets (6-4, 2-1 CC), who picked up their first win in their last three outings, never trailed after scoring the game's first three goals and led 6-1 at halftime.

Maddux posted his fifth hat trick of the season and scored three straight goals for Gettysburg spanning the first and second quarters.

Senior Evan Thomas (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and junior Martin Manilla (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) added two goals and one assist apiece while senior J.T. McCook (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) made six saves. Senior Matt Canter (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton) paced the defense with six ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Jonathan Cohen made nine saves for the Garnet (3-6, 1-2 CC).

Senior Bobby DeWees (Wilmington, Del./Wilmington Friends) opened the scoring 2:31 into the contest before sophomore Jimmy Morris (Waccabuc, N.Y./John Jay) potted his first collegiate two and a half minutes later. Maddux then struck with 5:56 on the first-quarter clock to complete the Bullets game-opening spurt.

After Braeden DeWan put Swarthmore on the scoreboard, Maddux reeled off two more tallies, striking with 13 seconds to go in the first quarter and again in a man-up situation with 13:15 left in the opening half to make it 5-1. Thomas completed the first-half scoring when he converted a Maddux dish with 2:31 showing in the stanza, giving the Bullets their four-goal lead at the break.
