William Smith Doubles up RIT in Liberty Action

GENEVA, N.Y.-William Smith sophomore Katie Sipple and first-year Hannah Connolly each produced seven points as the Herons defeated RIT 16-8 in a Liberty League contest played today on Boswell Field.

William Smith used a 5-0 run in the second half to secure its fifth straight victory. The Herons improved to 6-3 overall and 3-0 in the Liberty League. The Tigers fell to 7-4 and 2-2 in conference play.

Connolly logged a career-high five goals as well as two assists, two ground balls and a caused turnover for the Herons. Sipple recorded two goals and a career-high five assists. Senior Kathleen Ragan tallied four goals, picked up a game-high five ground balls and logged a game-high four caused turnovers. Senior Marissa Potter came away with a game-high seven draws and chipped in a goal. Sophomore Hayley Braun scored a goal and won four draws.

First-year Geneva Calder dished out two assists, and sophomore Rachel Hughes produced a goal and an assist as well as three ground balls and three draws. Sophomore Abbie West and senior Katie Dexter each scored a goal for the Herons. First-year goalie Marina Guigli played all 60 minutes for William Smith and finished with eight saves.

Sage Sarkis, Ashleigh Caruso and Corinna Mandell each tallied two goals for RIT. Sarkis also led her team with five draws. Megan Henriksen scooped up a team-high four ground balls. Shelby Vakeiner and Erin York each added a goal for the Tigers. Katelyn Crane played all 60 minutes in goal and finished with eight saves.

RIT jumped out to a 2-1 lead at 7:43. Sarkis scored the first goal of the game just 41 seconds in. Connolly answered for the Herons at 1:39. Sarkis struck again followed by a goal by Caruso. Calder fed Connolly to tie the game at two 8:44 in.

Mandell logged an unassisted tally 10 minutes in to give the Tigers back the lead. William Smith responded with three straight goals. Hughes notched her second of the season after a pass from Sipple, and an unassisted tally by Ragan followed by a goal by Dexter off a feed from Hughes gave William Smith a 5-4 advantage.

Mandell struck again for RIT to tie the game for a second time, however the Herons once again came back with a 3-0 run. Back-to-back goals by Ragan followed by an unassisted tally by Potter put William Smith up 8-5 at halftime.

It wasn't until 8:07, that RIT's Vakiener scored the first goal of the second half to get the Tigers within two. The Herons then took control of the game, starting a 5-0 run 33 seconds later. Sipple produced a goal and three assists in the scoring spree. She fed Ragan and then set up West under a minute later to make it 10-6. Connolly notched back-to-back tallies and then Sipple capped the run off a pass from Connolly to make it 13-6 with 9:01 remaining.

With 5:48 on the clock, York found the back of the net for RIT to make it 13-7, but Braun notched her third goal of the season, and Connolly set up Sipple 38 seconds later to stretch the Heron lead to nine. Marlee Vlassis set up Caruso's second goal of the game with 2:26 left for the final.

William Smith enjoyed a 31-24 advantage in shots, a 20-15 lead in ground balls and a 15-11 edge in draws. The Herons were successful on 12 of 15 clear attempts, while the Tigers finished 9 for 18.

William Smith will travel to take on St. Lawrence in another Liberty League contest on Friday, April 12 at 4:00 p.m.
