Gannon Ends Road Trip with Victory at Kutztown

KUTZTOWN, Pa. Four players of Kutztown scored twice on Saturday, but Kutztown fell to Gannon 19-7 in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match-up Saturday afternoon at Keystone Field.

The Golden Bears (2-7 overall, 1-4 PSAC) were led by Rosa Buffolino (Monroe Twp., NJ/Monroe Twp), Kelsey Hogan (Mt. Laurel, NJ/Lenape), and Brielle Dickey (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) who each scored two goals. Jillian Spencer (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) also scored a goal and Buffolino was good for one assist. Randy Vite (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) stepped up to control the field with four ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Gannon (7-3, 4-1) was the first to score three minutes into the first half, but Buffolino retaliated within 10 seconds. She won a draw control followed by a break away to score the first goal for KU. She finished the game leading with a career-high nine draw controls.

The Golden Knights went on to score five unanswered goals before Dickey scored the second goal for KU from a free position shot with just under 19 minutes left in the first half to take the score to 6-2.

GU scored again but the goal was answered by a second goal from Dickey on another free position shot to take the score to 7-3.

Two successful free position shots allotted Gannon two goals before Spencer scored her first goal of the game for KU to take the score to 9-4. The Golden Knights then scored three unanswered goals to take the teams to halftime leading the scoreboard 12-4.

The second half of play was opened by Gannon with three goals until the Golden Bears stole back the offensive advantage to score two consecutive goals. Hogan scored on an assist from Buffolino, and Buffolino notched her second goal of the game on a free position shot to take the score to 16-6.

KU's scoring streak was then interrupted by one goal from Gannon followed by Hogan scoring her second and last goal for KU on a free position shot to take the score to 17-7 with 5:23 left in the second half.

The Golden Bears return to action when they travel to Millersville University Tuesday, April 9 for a 4:00 p.m. start.

KUTZTOWN, Pa. One day after seeing its five-match win streak snapped at No. 2 West Chester, Gannon rebounded nicely with a convincing 19-7 victory Saturday afternoon at Kutztown.

Gannon moved to 4-0 all-time against Kutztown by controlling the first half. The Lady Knights out-shot the Golden Bears 19-7 and forced 14 turnovers during the opening 30 minutes. GU scored on 12 of those 19 shots to assume a 12-4 halftime lead.

A quick 5-0 Gannon burst in the span of three minutes and 46 seconds snapped an early 1-1 tie. Christie Valentine (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) broke the deadlock off an assist from Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn). The Jess Fugate (Wooster, Ohio/Wooster) from Caitlyn Fisher (Cypress, Texas/Cy-Fair) combo accounted for the next two goals. A Fisher tally followed by a Neagle free-position goal capped the run with 21:03 left in the half.

The two squads exchanged the next six goals, before Gannon raced into the intermission with the final three scores. Valentine netted two of the goals, including one on a free-position shot with 16 ticks remaining.

The Gannon run continued during the second half. The Lady Knights produced a running clock with the first three goals after the break. Two Fisher tallies sandwiched a Neagle score to push the Gannon lead to 15-4 with 19:02 to play. In all, Gannon held Kutztown scoreless for 23 minutes and 46 seconds during a stretch that spanned both halves and saw the Lady Knights score six goals.
