Grizzlies Fall to Mavericks on the Road

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo.- Adams University suffered a tough road loss this afternoon against the Colorado Mesa Mavericks. The Mavericks, 2-7 overall and 2-3 in WILA, out-shot the Grizzlies 39-24 in a 17-7 victory. ASU is now 3-5 overall and 2-4 in WILA play.

The first-half of the game started off in the Grizzlies' favor with a free position shot scored by freshman Qiana Barfield (Denver, Colo.) Barfield also scored another goal half way thru the opening half, tallying two total goals for the match. She also had one assist.

Juniors Amanda Hisel (Conifer, Colo.), Desi Rae Aguirre (Walsenburg, Colo.), and Megan Daly (Walnut Creek, Calif.) all accounted for one goal each during the first-half. Despite five goals from the Grizzlies, the Mavericks were able to remain on top at the end of the period, 9-5.

During the second-half, sophomore Heather Jones (Littleton, Colo) helped give the Grizzlies' some energy with a free position shot just twenty seconds in. Despite Jones' goal and Lexy Hamilton's (Monte Vista, Colo) goal halfway thru the half, the Grizzlies were not able to keep up with the Maverick's eight goals.

Colorado Mesa's Allie Henderson scored four goals and also tallied two assists, while Lexie Chavez had three goals for the Mavericks. Paige Amme and Ashley Eickoff both had four assists in the match.

Defensively, Daly had four groundballs for the Grizzlies. Grace Komatz (Centennial, Colo) tallied 17 saves to the Maverick's five saves. Brynsley Michael (Seattle, Wash.) also tallied three total ground balls for Adams State.

ASU will return to action on April 13 in Colorado Springs against Colorado College. The first draw is set for 5:00 p.m.
