Mavericks Drop ECC Battle to No. 9 NYIT

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2013) - Mercy fell to No. 9 NYIT at Mavericks Field, 16-11. With the win, the Bears improved to 8-2 overall and 2-1 in the ECC, while the Mavericks slipped to 7-3 and 1-2.

Mercy owned the first quarter as the Mavericks scored three goals for an early lead. Senior Mike Marzocca (North Babylon, N.Y.), junior Zack Zangle (West Babylon, N.Y.) and sophomore Owen Valance (Glen Cove, N.Y.) found the back of the netting.

However, NYIT roared back in the second period as the Bears scored eight goals to Mercy's one. The Mavericks' marker was recorded by sophomore Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y.). At halftime, NYIT led, 8-4.

Following a pair of NYIT goals to start the third quarter, Mercy received three straight goals from freshman Ftim Lajqi (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.), senior Alex Martello (Montville, N.J.) and senior Joe Poppe (Elbridge, N.Y.). A few more back-and-forth goals for both squads and the score at the conclusion of the third stanza was 13-9 in favor of the Bears.

The Mavericks cut their deficit to 14-11 when Wood scored a man-up goal with 6:06 remaining in the game. The Bears were able to notch two more goals to secure the 16-11 victory.

In all, Wood led the Mavericks with two goals and three assists, while Marzocca, Martello and Poppe each scored two goals. Between the pipes, rookie A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y.) made 14 saves.

For the Bears, Cory Triola, A.P. Nist and Eric Talbot scored three goals each, while Luke Miller added two goals and five assists. In the cage, Joe Fallon stopped 14 shots.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks return to action on Saturday, Apr. 13 when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to play Chestnut Hill College at 1:00 p.m.
