Varn Nets Four and Hofstra Defense Silences Saint Joseph's

FOLSOM, Pa. - Saint Joseph's dropped a 13-1 match-up to Hofstra in the HEADstrong Foundation's first annual Relentless Cup at Ridley High School's Phil Marion Field on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Hawks stand at 5-7 overall and 1-3 in Colonial Athletic Association action.

Hofstra (7-4, 2-2 CAA) got on the board early as the Pride's Torin Varn scored his first of four goals on the evening at the 12:29 mark of the opening period.

Saint Joseph's responded as sophomore attack Matthew Sarcona (Northport, N.Y./Northport) dished a pass to sophomore midfielder Michael Dougherty (Malvern, Pa./Malvern), who scored his 12th goal of the season with 4:17 remaining in the first to tie to score, 1-1.

From there, Hofstra would go on a 12-0 run that spanned the rest of the game, exploding for six of those goals in the second period alone.

Dougherty landed all five of his shots on goal for the Hawks while sophomore defender Kevin Barrow (Avon Grove, Pa./Avon Grove) picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers. Junior midfielder Will Abbott (Chevy Chase, Md./Bullis School) picked up three ground balls and went 8 of 15 (.533) from the face-off.

Sophomore goalkeeper Dustin Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) (5-7, 1-3 CAA) made 15 saves in a complete 60-minute effort.

For the game, Hofstra held advantages in shots (39-25) and ground balls (26-14) and registered 14 more shots on goal than the Hawks (28-14).

Saint Joseph's will return to CAA action next Saturday, April 13 against Delaware. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Finnesey Field.

Folsom, PA Torin Varn scored four goals and added an assist and three other Pride players tallied two goals apiece as Hofstra defeated the Hawks of St. Joseph's, 13-1 in the inaugural HEADstrong Foundation Relentless Cup at Ridley High School's Phil Marion Field Saturday night.

The Colonial Athletic Association victory improves Hofstra's record to 7-4 overall and 2-2 in conference play. The Hawks fall to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in the CAA.

Varn recorded his fifth hat-trick of the season and his third game with four or more goals. Junior Drew Coholan and sophomore local product Tyler Johnston each recorded two goals and one assists. Sophomore Mike Malave also added two goals for the Pride. Senior Adrian Sorichetti and junior Lance Yapor each posted a goal and an assist.

Sophomore goalie Chris Selva recorded 12 saves in almost 57 minutes of play before being relieved by senior Ryan Brant, who made one save. The one goal allowed is the fewest allowed by a Pride team since a 15-1 victory over Lafayette College in 1985.

Sophomore Michael Dougherty recorded the Hawks lone goal in the first quarter while sophomore Dustin Keen made 15 saves for the Hawks.

The Pride opened the scoring just 2:30 into the contest as Varn took a short pass from Drew Coholan in the middle of the box and beat Keen for a 1-0 lead. But the Hawks tied the game with 4:17 to play in the quarter as Michael Dougherty scored a man-up goal off a pass from Brian Urban.

Hofstra, which is 7-0 when scoring four or more consecutive goals in a game this season, then went on a 14-goal run, including six in the final 15 minutes of the first half, to take a commanding 7-1 lead. Coholan started it just 12 seconds into the second quarter, off a rebound, for his 10th goal of the season.

Malave scored the first of two goals a little over three minutes later, off a pass from Tyler Begley from seven yard out on the side. Senior Adrian Sorichetti then notched his 12th of the year on a run across the box with 8:42 to play in the half for a 4-1 lead.
