'Wick Battles Elmira But Falls Late

ELMIRA, NY Hartwick held a 10-8 lead with under 20 minutes left to play but host Elmira scored the game's final five goals, including the last three with under eight and a half minutes remaining to secure a 13-10 win on Sunday at EC's Campus Field. The Hawks drop to 4-6 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8. Elmira improves to 5-5 and 1-2.

The Hawks fell behind early, 3-0, but fought back to tie the game at halftime. Three of the first four goals in the second half propelled Hartwick to a two-goal lead but it was unable to find the net for the remainder of the game. The Soaring Eagles tied the score at 10-10 with under 12 minutes left and they tallied three times in a 3:07 span to secure the victory.

Junior Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) led Hartwick with two goals and two assists. She also caused a team-high three turnovers. Sophomore Emily Jweid (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) scored twice and added a game-high seven draw controls. Sophomore Jackie Moynihan (West Islip, NY/West Islip) also contributed a pair of goals for the Hawks.

The Hawks outshot EC by a margin of 26-23 in the contest. They also had more ground balls (26-25) and draw controls (14-11).

The hosts jumped out to a three-goal advantage as they scored three straight times in the opening 7:04. Moorea Spoljaric, who led all scorers with six goals, tallied the first two Soaring Eagle goals.

Hartwick battled back with two goals in a 36 second span to make it a 3-2 game. Seniors Erin Doyle (Syracuse, NY/Corcoran) and Kate O'Shea (Ridgewood, NJ/Ridgewood) picked up the goals with Purcell assisting on the second.

Spoljaric added a third near the midpoint of the second half to increase the EC advantage but Moynihan netted back to back free-position goals 24 seconds apart to tie the score at 4-4. After two goals put EC in front once again, the Hawks evened the score at 6-6 following tallies from Lisa Littleton (Yorktown, NY/Yorktown HS) and Purcell.

Ashton Hogan made it a 7-6 game for Elmira with 6:15 left on the clock, but Purcell came right back 45 ticks later with her second goal to even the score at halftime, 7-7.

The Hawks bolted in front inside the first minute of play in the second half. Meg Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) scored at 29:34 to give 'Wick its first lead and Jweid scored from a Purcell feed to push the margin to two, 10-8, just 13 seconds later.

EC pulled to within one on a Marki Michaels tally, but Jweid scored on the free-position with 21:17 left on the clock to make the score 10-8 Hartwick's favor.

Jweid nearly scored Hartwick's eleventh goal with just under 20 minutes left but her shot hit the pipe and bounced out. Spoljaric then cut the EC deficit to one with her fifth tally at 18:23.

Both teams mustered one shot apiece over the next six and a half minutes. Hogan had a shot denied by Hartwick keeper Steph Luce (Saratoga Springs, NY/Saratoga Springs) and Meg Luce had a free-position shot saved by EC's LeAnna Pressler.

Elmira would tie the score with 11:56 to play on a goal from Emma Schepers. The Soaring Eagles retook the lead 3:25 later on Spoljaric's sixth of the day. They won the ensuing draw and got some insurance less than a minute later to go up 12-10 with under eight minutes remaining.

Jweid and Moynihan both fired shots at the EC goal with a chance to cut the lead in half but Presler made saves on both. Michaels closed out the scoring with 5:24 to go. The Hawks had three more shots, one being stopped by Presler for her ninth save of the day.
