Quinnipiac's Fast Start Keys Win Over Wagner

Hamden, CT Wagner fell into an early 4-0 hole, trailed 8-2 at halftime and wound up on the short end of a 13-7 decision against Quinnipiac at sun-splashed QU Stadium despite a three-goal outing by freshman Stephanie Peterson (Vernon Township, NJ/ Vernon).

In dropping their third straight game, the Seahawks fall to 5-9 on the season, 1-5 in the Northeast Conference (NEC) while the Bobcats improve to 5-7 overall, 3-2 in league play.

Lianne Toomey scored two of her game-high four goals in the opening seven minutes of the game, which were followed by goals by Michaela Tinsley and Kyra Ochwat which made it a 4-0 game with 20:13 to play in the first half.

Wagner then got on the board via an unassisted goal by freshman Shea Gegan (Manasquan, NJ/ Manasquan) to make it 4-1. Seahawk senior Jillian Maloney (Mahopac, NY/ Mahopac) followed a Toomey goal with one of her own at 6:52 to make it 5-2 before the Bobcats closed the half with three straight goals in building their 8-2 lead at intermission.

Quinnipiac opened the second half on a 2-1 run in seizing their biggest lead of the game at 10-3 at the 16:47 mark. Wagner answered with back-to-back goals by Peterson to close the gap to 10-5 at10:04 but Quinnipiac countered with two goals of its own to push the lead to 12-5 en route to the 13-7 win.

The Seahawks led in ground balls, 20-18 while Quinnipiac held a 29-25 lead in shots, a 13-9 edge in draw controls and as 2 of 2 on free-position shots vs. Wagner which was 1 of 5 in this category,

In addition to Peterson's three goals, Wagner received one goal apiece from Gegan, Maloney, sophomore Jessica Mills (Vernon Township, NJ/ Vernon), and freshmen Casey McCarthy (Cypress, TX/ Cy-Fair) and Kimmy Tumolo (Mullica Hill,, NJ/ Clearview).

Freshman goalie Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD/ McDonogh) recorded nine saves during the game's first 56 minutes before giving way to sophomore Shannon Sweeney (Madison, NJ/ Madison) who played the final four minutes.

Toomey's four goals and one assist gave her a game-high five-point game, Tinsley added three goals while Ochwat and Kayla Fu chipped in with two goals each for the Bobcats. Sarah Allen dished out a game-high three assists while Samantha Tilts turned away 13 shots in goal for Quinnipiac.

Wagner returns home for a pair of NEC contest s next weekend, hosting Central Connecticut on Friday, April 12 at 3:00 pm and Bryant on Sunday, April 14 at 1:00 pm.
