Bears Rough up Kangaroos

Potsdam, N.Y. -- Potsdam (4-4) ran past North Country rival SUNY Canton (4-4) 18-7 in a nonconference match-up this afternoon.

The Potsdam offense was led by sophomore Bailey Weigel (East Amherst, N.Y./Williamsville East) and freshman Bri McClusky (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart), who each totaled seven points in the contest. Sophomore midfielder Tressa Goolden (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) led the Kangaroos with three goals and two assists.

Potsdam opened up the scoring early. Just under a minute into the contest junior attack Michelle Varney (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) drove to the net for an unassisted score. Canton answered at 25:49, but just 16 seconds later Varney hit the back of the net for her second of the day to give the Bears the lead for good.

Her goal sparked a 6-0 scoring run for the Bears, giving them a 7-1 advantage at 7:36. Canton was able to go on a short run of its own with five and a half minutes remaining in the half. The Kangaroos scored three unanswered goals before Potsdam stopped the momentum with a goal from Weigel off a pass from McClusky with 32 seconds to go in the half. The Bears took an 8-4 lead into the break.

The Bears got off to a strong start in the second half with a 4-0 run. Sophomore midfielder Margaret Wall (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas) scored the first two of the streak followed by Varney's third of the day and found freshman defender Maggie McCabe (Camillus, N.Y./West Genesee) first collegiate tally for a 12-4 advantage with 17:47 left.

Canton scored twice to slow the Bears momentum, but not stop it. Potsdam started another 4-0 run with a goal from McClusky at 14:23. Senior midfielder Julie Perna (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville North) scored just under two minutes later off a free position attempt, with McClusky and Weigel piling on to make it 16-6 at the 10:27 mark. Canton netted just one more goal on the day about three minutes later.

As the clock ran down Potsdam tacked on two more. Weigel was fed by freshman midfielder Brittany Blake (South Glens Falls, N.Y./South Glens Falls) for a goal at 4:34 and with 33 seconds to go in the game freshman Lizzie Marchbank (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) took the ball to the goal for an unassisted score and her first collegiate goal.

Junior goalie Jen Chmiel (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge) recorded eight saves on 15 shots on in the first 47:42 to record her fourth career win. Freshman Sally Mooney (New Albany, Ohio/Wyoming Seminary) played the final 12:18, collecting two ground balls and forcing a turnover. Roos freshman goalie Alyssa Altschuler (Cheshire, Conn./North Haven) finished with 11 stops.

The Bears finished with advantages in shots (39-22), ground balls (36-23) and draw controls (17-10). Weigel seized another nine draw controls on the day.

Potsdam begins a four-game road trip this Tuesday, when the Bears will faceoff against SUNYAC foe Oneonta State at 4:00 p.m.
