Towson Opens Early Lead to Defeat American

The American University lacrosse team battled back from a nine-goal deficit in the second half, but couldn't complete the comeback as it fell, 11-6, to Towson on Tuesday afternoon at Jacobs Field.

Kimberly Collins extended her scoring streak to 37 and led American (6-8, 3-0 PL) with three points on two goals and one assist. Jamie Silverman added two points off a goal and assist. Emily Maher, Olivia Mangan and Samantha Marshall notched two draw controls apiece and Laura Dawson collected two ground balls to lead the Eagles. Teal Harrison tallied double-digit saves for the seventh time this season, stopping 13 shots.

Towson (5-7, 4-0 CAA) struck first with an unassisted tally from Ashleigh Rohrback at the 26:32 mark before Collins found the back of the net on a free position shot less than a minute later. The Tigers answered with a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead with 18:21 to play in the first half. Silverman was able to end the streak, scoring off a free position shot with 9:45 remaining but Rohrback added her second of the day to send Towson into the break up 7-2.

The Tigers continued its run, scoring four straight goals to open the second half to take its largest lead, 11-2, with 22:18 to play. Collins prevented Towson from taking a double-digit lead however, slipping it past Kelsea Donnelly with 20:30 remaining in the game to make it 11-3. Neither team could find the back of the net for nearly 18 minutes before the Eagles added three consecutive goals in the final three minutes, with two in the last minute of play, for the 11-6 final score.

Towson held a 31-16 advantage in shots, 12-5 advantage in ground balls collected and 10-8 edge in draw controls for the game. Rhiannon Coogle led the Tigers with four goals and Rohrback finished with five points on two goals and three assists. Donnelly made six saves as the starting goalkeeper.

The Eagles will look to match the program record for most conference wins and remain undefeated in the Patriot League when it travels to Lafayette on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m. American closes out the regular season with a pair of games at Jacobs Field on Wednesday, April 17 at 4:00 p.m. against Longwood and Sunday, April 21 at 12:00 p.m. against defending Patriot League Champion No. 13 Navy for Senior Day. Both games will be broadcast live on Eagles Vision TV.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Towson opened up an 11-2 lead en route to an 11-6 victory at American University on Tuesday afternoon. Rhiannon Coogle and Ashleigh Rohrback combined for six goals and three assists to lead the Tigers (5-7) to their fourth straight victory.

The Tigers and Eagles traded goals early and found themselves tied at 1-1 with 25:45 to play in the first. Coogle scored on a free position goal at 24:25 to jump start a 5-0 run by the Tigers. That run gave the Tigers a 6-1 with 18:21 to play in the first. Coogle scored three times in that stretch to record her fourth straight hat trick.

Jamie Silverman scored a free position goal at 9:45 which briefly halted the Tigers' run. Towson scored one more time before the half as Rohrback tallied an unassisted goal at 5:15. Towson took a 7-2 lead at the half.

Towson outshot the Eagles, 21-9 in the first 30 minutes of play while American won six of the ten draw controls.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the second half at 29:19 with a free position goal from freshman Breanna Hamm. The Tigers scored three more times before the 22 minute mark in the half. Seniors Olivia Turner, Laura Zinkand and Coogle all scored during that stretch. All three of those Tiger goals were assisted by Rohrback and gave Towson an 11-2 lead.
