#2 Panthers Notch 9th Straight with Win vs. Assumption

Garden City, N.Y. No. 2 Adelphi hosted the Greyhounds of Assumption in a Northeast-10 contest on Motamed Field. The Panthers led 5-3 at the half and never relinquished the lead en route to a 10-7 victory. With the win, the Panthers remain undefeated at 9-0 and 7-0 in the NE-10 while the Greyhounds fall to 1-8 and 1-6 in the conference.

The Panthers were led by Nick Watson who notched three goals and one assist for four total points. Joe Celano found the back of the net twice and also dished out one assist while teammate Luke Spitzer checked in with two points behind a goal and an assist. Ikerson Hopper picked up two points behind two goals with Brian Prendergast adding two assists. Robert Rossi and Patrick Starke also contributed a point behind a goal each.

On defense, Gregory Puskuldjian and Rashad Cuerton combined for a perfect 10-10 in successful faceoffs in the opening half; it total, the tandem won 16 of 20 faceoffs. Puskuldjian led the squad with seven ground balls while Cuerton picked up six. In goal, Eric Janssen played the first 30 minutes and picked up the win after allowing three goals while making three saves. Aidan Bennardo played the second half, made two saves and let up four goals.

Assumption's Tim Casey tallied the first goal almost midway through the first half. From there, the Panthers scored three unanswered goals courtesy of Spitzer, Hopper and Starke to lead 3-1 with just over a minute to play. Ian Mack added the visitors' final goal of the frame to cut Adelphi's lead to 3-2.

The second quarter proceeded similarly as Mike Jednak tied things up for the Greyhounds. However, Watson and Rossi went back-to-back for the Brown and Gold to put the home squad in front 5-3; a lead they would hold for good.

Celano's two goals came in the third quarter for the Panthers. The first came with 13:20 remaining in the period to extend the Panthers lead to 6-3 while his second came as a response to a Garrett Smith score to put the Panthers back up by three, 7-4. An unassisted goal by Peter Gersbeck rounded out the scoring in the penultimate period, as he found the back of the net with 3:46 remaining to cut Adelphi's lead to two, 7-5.

The Greyhounds would get no closer than. Watsotn and Hopper combined for three goals in the final period to secure the victory. Watson's first tally came with 12:58 remaining in the game off of a pass from Tuttle. Daniel Fitzergerald responded for Assumption to pull them back within two at 8-6. Watson took advantage of a man-up opportunity and fired a shot on a pass from Prendergast into the back of the net with less than five minutes remaining while Hopper added an unassisted score to nearly two minutes later to ice the victory for the Brown and Gold.

The Panthers return to action on Saturday, April 13 when they travel to #11 Saint Michael's College for a 1 pm Northeast-10 Conference contest.
