Strong Second Half Lifts Royals Past Valkyries

SPARTANBURG, S.C. Queens (8-8) played a strong second half to push past the Valkyries of Converse (8-7) this evening on the road. The Royals won 12-7 improving their league record to 4-1. Converse drops to 2-3 in Conference Carolinas action.

After jumping out to a 3-0 lead in the first five minutes of action, the Royals found themselves trailing 5-4 at the break due to turnovers, which the Valkyries converted into goals.

Brittany Larranaga and Nicole Forgione would get the Royals going in the second with back-to-back goals within 24 seconds of each other. Two ties would follow before Forgione put Queens ahead for good with a solo score at 10:56. Larranaga would follow with two more goals to put the Royals up 10-7 at 9:38.

The Royals stayed aggressive firing everything they had at Converse's keeper in the final 10 minutes of action. Alexandra Gurecki was able to turn away five shots before Queens ended things with two more goals in the final two minutes of action capping their run at 5-0.

The Royals outshot Converse 33-21, and split the draw controls 5-5. After turning the ball over 11 times in the first half, Queens only tallied five in the second.

Forgione and Larranage recorded a hat trick for the Royals, while also tallying one assist apiece. Jena Ready also notched four points after totaling two goals and two assists. Brittany Barnwell added two goals. Danielle Horoschak finished the day with 12 saves in goal.

Brooke Bondurant led Converse with two goals and one assist. Gurecki finished the game with 15 saves.

The Royals will close their regular season with a road game at No. 6 Pfeiffer University.
