Deveau Leads Colby in Rout of Southern Maine

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby All-American Ian Deveau (Portsmouth, R.I.) had three goals and one assist as the Mules opened up a 6-0 lead in the second quarter on the way to a 16-4 victory over University of Southern Maine in non-conference action Wednesday night.

Colby (5-6 overall) also received two goals apiece from Derek Youngman (Cohasset, Mass.), Keith Fairbrother (Madison, N.J.), and Chip Grossman (Charlottesville, Va.). Greg McKillop (Washington, D.C.) added one goal and two assists, while John Grimaldi (Manchester, Mass.) had one goal and one assist. The Mules also received goals from James Wyse (Newton, Mass.), John Alex Rutan (Walnut Creek, Calif.), Phil Champoux (North Yarmouth, Maine), Spike Smigelski (Mountain Lakes, N.J.), and Thomas Brewster (Fairfield, Conn.).

Kyle Baker (Kennebunk, Maine) led USM (4-7 overall) with two goals, while Mark White (Oakville, Ontario) added one goal and one assist. Dylan Kenney (Portland, Maine) had the other goal for the Huskies.

The Mules scored three times on goals by Deveau, Rutan, and Brewster in the first 6:52 of the contest to lead 3-0 after one quarter. Colby stretched the lead to 6-0 midway through the second quarter on scores by Youngman (Kris Molinaro assist), McKillop, and Smigelski.

Kenney gave the Huskies some life with an unassisted goal with 4:35 to play, but Grimaldi scored 57 seconds later to push the lead to 7-1. Deveau tallied with just one second to halftime.

Colby took total control in the third quarter, with the only four goals of the period in a span of 2:09. Youngman started the run just 35 seconds into the second half and was followed by Deveau and two straight scores from Grossman.

Fairbrother scored just 54 seconds into the fourth quarter to push Colby's lead to 13-1. Baker scored two straight goals for USM to make it 13-3 with 10:10 to play. Fairbrother scored again just 30 seconds after Baker's second goal. White made it 14-4 with 7:56 to play, but Colby scored the final two goals of the game by Wyse and Champoux.

Tyler Will (Woodbury, N.Y.) played the opening three quarters and Dylan Rothenberg (Short Hills, N.J.) played the final 15 minutes for Colby. The two combined for nine saves. Ryan Hatch (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made nine saves for USM.

Eric Eberhart (Rye Beach, N.H.) was 10 for 15 on face-offs and scooped two ground balls for Colby. Ian Boldt (Millburn, N.J.) and Christian Kelso (Summit, N.J.) each had two caused turnovers for the Mules. Peter Willauer (Duxbury, Mass.) led in ground balls with four and had one caused turnover.

Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, Maine) had six ground balls and won nine face-offs for USM. Kenney and Jaymz McStowe (Plymouth, Mass.) each had four ground balls for USM.
