McDaniel Pulls Away for Centennial Win over Swarthmore

WESTMINSTER, Md. McDaniel put together a six-goal second quarter en route to a 13-7 victory over Swarthmore in Centennial Conference (CC) men's lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Pat Woglom (Cranford, N.J./Cranford) and Zach Monzo (Collegeville, Pa./Spring-Ford) scored four goals apiece to lead the Green Terror (4-9, 1-4 CC), who finished the game with a 48-28 advantage in shots.

Ian Lukaszewicz led the Garnet (3-7, 2-2 CC) with two goals and an assist.

Tied at 1-all after Monzo and Wes Marcik traded tallies in the first quarter, Jason Lawrence (Fallston, Md./Fallston) scored 57 seconds into the second quarter to give McDaniel the lead for good.

Woglom pushed the lead to 3-1 just 14 seconds later before Lukaszewicz cut the deficit to one at the 12:39 mark.

Lawrence started a four-goal burst that pushed the lead to 7-2 with 6:27 showing.

Monzo tallies twice and Woglom added one goal during the run. Lawrence also had one of his two assists.

After Lukaszewicz cut the deficit to 7-3 on a close-range shot with 2:02 to play, the Green Terror was flagged for an unreleasable unsportsmanlike penalty that gave the ball to Swarthmore.

The Garnet capitalized with a Molloy marker 12 seconds into the man-up situation before tacking on a second man-up score with 1:07 to play when Steve Selverian finished a Molloy helper to trim the halftime deficit to 7-5.

Back-to-back Woglom tallies 44 seconds apart pushed the lead to 9-5 with 9:29 on the clock before Monzo finished one of three Skippy Clary (Baltimore, Md./Catonsville) assists with 3:05 to play for a 10-5 advantage.

Selverian scored with 0.6 seconds showing on the third-quarter clock to make it a 10-6 game before Lawrence, Sean Brett (Hamilton, N.J./Notre Dame) and Pat Bivons (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) stretched the lead to 13-6 with 5:19 to play.

Marcik set the final margin, scoring with 4:21 on the clock.

Ryan Gillen (Merrick, N.Y./Calhoun) went 12 for 18 on faceoffs as part of a 14 for 22 showing at the X for the Green Terror.

Matt Dupras (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) matched Clary with a team-high three assists.

McDaniel returns to action at Muhlenberg on Saturday. Game time is 4:00 p.m.

WESTMINISTER, Md. - Swarthmore (3-7, 1-3 CC) suffered a Centennial Conference setback at McDaniel (4-9, 1-4 CC) on Wednesday night by a 13-7 score.

After a close scoring opening half, the Green Terror surged ahead in the second by outscoring the Garnet 6-2 to collect its first conference victory of the season.

Seniors Wes Marcik and Steve Selverian along with sophomore Ian Lukaszewicz tallied two goals apiece in the effort. Jon Molloy finished with one goal and one assist. Selverian collected a game-high six ground balls and Michael Girardi forced three McDaniel turnovers in the contest.

Leading the McDaniel offense was Zach Monzo and Pat Woglom with four goals each, while Jason Lawrence racked up a hat trick and two assists.

Between the pipes, Jonathan Cohen made 17 stops for the Garnet. The Green Terror used three keepers in the contest with Christian Dallmus making eight saves in 53:08 of playing time.

Lawrence broke the 1-1 tie at 14:03 in the second period to start a high-scoring frame for both teams. The Green Terror added one more before Lukaszewicz collected his first of the game off a pass from Mac Mcquire at 12:39 to set the score at 3-2. Homestanding McDaniel responded with four goals over the next five minutes to take a 7-2 lead with 6:27 remaining in the half. In the final two minutes of action, the Garnet fired off three goals to make it 7-5 at halftime.

The Green Terror came out of the break with three more goals to taking a commanding 10-5 lead and held the momentum to the finish McDaniel's defense allowed just two goals in the final two periods to collect the conference victory.

Swarthmore will host No. 15 Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, April 13 at 1:00 p.m.
