Nicholas Lifts Bears Past Lakers in Double Overtime

POTSDAM, N.Y.-Senior attackman Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) buried a pass from senior midfielder Pat Morrill (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) to give SUNY Potsdam (5-3, 1-1 SUNYAC) an 11-10 double-overtime victory over Oswego State (6-4, 1-2).

Nicholas had three goals to lead the Bears and senior captain Rob Kunz (Watertown, N.Y./Immaculate Heart) added two goals and an assist. Sophomore midfielder Jimmy Cordon (Camillus, N.Y./Onondaga CC) led the Lakers with four goals on the night.

Cordon put Oswego up 1-0 3:15 into the contest with a man-up tally and Oswego held the lead for nearly seven minutes. Potsdam answered with a 3-0 run on goals from junior attackman Jeff Seager (Ballston Spa, N.Y./Ballston Spa), junior midfielder Derek Frost (Buffalo, N.Y./Williamsville East) and freshman attackman Matt Kennedy (Clay, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse. Laker sophomore attackman Cody Hoose (Syracuse, N.Y./West Genesee) cut the gap to 3-2 at the 1:28 mark and the score remained the same at the first break.

The teams alternated goals in the second quarter. Cordon, junior attackman Chris Porten (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) and junior midfielder Nick Gianpaolo (Setauket, N.Y./Bryant University) each scored for Oswego. Kunz answered with two goals and freshman midfielder Pat Bonafede (Churchville,

N.Y./Churchville-Chili) chipped in one as Potsdam took a 6-5 advantage into halftime.

After Cordon tied the game at 11:08 of the third quarter, Nicholas and Seager gave the Bears an 8-6 lead. Penalties hurt Potsdam over the remainder of the period as Oswego scored three straight man-up goals to take a 9-8 lead into the final 15 minutes. Senior attackman Casey Balzer (Nassau, N.Y./Hudson Valley CC), Giampaolo and Cordon scored in succession.

The defenses tightened up in the fourth quarter. Frost tied the game with a man-down goal at 13:38. Potsdam killed off two more penalties during the next seven minutes, but Porten put Oswego back in front at 6:02.

After the Lakers won the ensuing faceoff, Bear senior goalie Stefan Sloma made a difficult save and Potsdam cleared the zone. Bonafede found Nicholas, who beat Oswego junior goalie Bryan Martin (Saint James, N.Y./Smithtown East) to tie the score at 10-10 with 3:23 left in regulation. After another Laker faceoff win, Sloma intercepted a pass and Potsdam fired off three more chances as time expired.

Oswego controlled the play in the first overtime, but after two more critical Sloma saves Potsdam had the ball again with time running out. Two more Bear shots were unable to find the back of the net as the four-minute extra session ran out.

Junior midfielder Jared Flath (Dexter, N.Y./General Brown) won the faceoff to start the second overtime and Potsdam methodically moved the ball an ran the clock. Morrill had a shot blocked at 2:19 followed by a great save from Martin 13 seconds later off a chance from Frost. The Lakers claimed the ground ball and looked to clear the zone. Sophomore midfielder Kyle Wistner (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville East) had the ball knocked from his stick, by Morrill who scooped up the loose ball and fired to Nicholas for the victory.

Sloma finished with 10 saves, including two in overtime, for his fifth career victory. Martin stopped 11 shots for Oswego on the night.

Potsdam outshot the Lakers 45-34, but Oswego finished with slim advantages in ground balls (40-37) and faceoffs (14-11). The Lakers scored five man-up goals in 11 chances and the Bears were 1-3 in extra-man opportunities.
