No. 4 Red Dragons Win 8th Straight, Snap Cardinals' Streak

ALLENTOWN, PA. Eleven different players scored goals as fourth-ranked Cortland defeated Catholic, 18-9, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa. The Red Dragons won their eighth consecutive game and improved to 11-1 on the season, while the Cardinals had a three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 6-6.

Freshman Erica Geremia (Camillus/West Genesee) led Cortland with seven points on game highs of four goals and three assists. Sophomore Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored twice and matched Geremia with three assists. Senior Gina Campese (East Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and junior Liz Beville (Syracuse/Jamesville-DeWitt) each recorded two goals and one assist, sophomore Emma Hayes-Hurley tallied two goals and senior Laura Edward (Blue Point/Bayport-Blue Point) contributed one goal and one assist. Five other Red Dragons found the back of the net once.

Senior Shauna Hutchinson (Islip Terrace/East Islip) started in goal, making 11 saves and allowing eight goals in 57 minutes, 17 seconds. Freshman Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) played the final 2:43 and registered one save. Junior Jessica Lavelle (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) recorded game highs of seven caused turnovers and seven ground balls, Hayes-Hurley won a game-high five draw controls and caused two turnovers and freshman Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) had four draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.

Sophomore Caroline DiBartolomeo (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) paced Catholic with four goals, and senior Katie Miller (Walkersville, MD) added three goals. Junior Theresa Ciletti (Ocean City, MD/Worcester Prep) had one goal and one assist and sophomore Lindsay Brophy (Haddonfield, NJ) netted one goal. Sophomore goalie Tricia Pehnke (West Windsor, NJ/West Windsor Plainsboro North) stopped seven shots in 48:52 before giving way to junior Yasmeen Ajdari (Bethesda, MD/Walter Johnson), who stopped one shot over the final 11:08. Ciletti and Kelly Neligan collected five ground balls each, and Brophy and Alexis Martin had three draw controls apiece.

Just over six minutes into the game, the teams were tied at 2-2 as Campese and Geremia scored for Cortland and Miller and DiBartolomeo tallied goals for Catholic. The Red Dragons then ran off five straight goals from five different players to grab a 7-2 lead at the 11:55 mark of the opening half. Miller and DiBartolomeo pulled the Cardinals to within 7-4 before Hayes-Hurley, Farrell and Beville closed out the half with goals to make it a 10-4 game at the break.

Catholic scored three of the first five goals of the second half to cut Cortland's advantage to 12-7, but the Red Dragons took control of the game with six consecutive goals for an 18-7 lead with 6:30 remaining. Geremia scored twice and Farrell registered a pair of assists during the run. Ciletti stopped the streak with her goal at 2:48 and Brophy closed the scoring at 1:18 for the 18-9 final.
