Boxers Send Out Seniors with Drubbing of Rival Linfield

FOREST GROVE Pacific gave their seven seniors a big gift in their final home game Friday, limiting rival Linfield to just four shots en route to a 19-3 drubbing of the Wildcats in action at Lincoln Park Stadium.

The Boxers (7-4) bolted out to an unheard of 18-0 halftime lead and did not allow Linfield (0-9) a single shot in the opening 30 minutes. Carmen Taplin (Sr., Hillsboro, Ore.) scored all four of her goals in the first 12 minutes while Kelly Stevens (Sr., Colorado Springs, Colo.) scored three of her four goals in the opening period. Kaitlyn Harper (Jr., Oregon City, Ore.), Kristen Dick (Sr., Auburn, Wash.) and Katie Oliver (Fr., Portland, Ore.) each scored two while five other Pacific players scored on goal each.

Shelby Duarte scored all three of the Wildcats' second half goals, all of which were unassisted. Pacific outshot Linfield 35-4, owned a 28-15 advantage in ground balls and a 13-11 advantage in draw controls. Linfield turned the ball over 29 times, 20 of which were caused by the Boxers.

Taplin opened scoring just 34 seconds into the game when she connected off of a Harper assist. Harper and Melanie Niehus (So., Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed with goals that put the Boxers up 3-0 with just two minutes gone. Pacific went without scoring for five minutes before Stevens scored an unassisted goal that started a rush of seven Boxers' goals over a 2 minute, 20 second span. Taplin scored three of the goals, Stevens tallied two and Nicki Leeming (Fr., Las Vegas, Nev.) capped the run that put the Boxers up 10-0 at the 19:33 mark.

Scoring would come at regular intervals the rest of the half. Dick scored an unassisted goal with 11:55 to go to make it 12-0 and Srevens connected off a Haley Korous (Fr., Cottonwood Heights, Utah) assist with 4:06 left for the commanding 15-0 lead. Oliver added two more goals and Kara Smouse (Fr., Carbondale, Colo.) scored her lone goal in the final two minutes to give the Boxers the 18-0 lead. Pacific outshot Linfield 30-0 in the opening half.

Duarte opened the second half with Linfield's first shot and goal, connecting just 33 seconds into the period. Pacific controlled time of possession from there and spent much of the rest of the game playing the passing game to run out the clock. Stevens scored off a Taplin assist with 11:32 to go, which allowed the Boxers to replace starting goalkeeper Brittany Hartmann (Sr., Portland, Ore.) for Karla Salas (Fr., Aspen, Colo.).

Duarte added two late goals for the Wildcats, scoring unassisted with 9:20 left and connecting on her second free position goal of the game with 56 seconds to go.

Hartmann did not make a save in 48 minutes in goal, allowing just the one goal. Erika Phillipo took the loss for Linfield in goal, making seven saves.

Pacific will close out the 2013 season on the road next weekend, playing Calvin on Sat, Apr. 20, and Olivet on Sun., Apr. 21, in Grand Rapids, Mich.
