Canisius Wins Ninth Straight, Defeats Fairfield

Fairfield dropped a 13-6 decision to visiting MAAC foe Canisius on Saturday on Lessing Field. The loss drops the Stags to 8-8 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Griffs improve to 11-3 on the year and 5-0 in league play.

Canisius scored the first four goals of the game, in a 3:48 span early in the first-half. Maria Kotas started the scoring at the 26:09 mark and was followed 75 seconds later by a free position goal from Lindsey Morgan. Kotas made it 3-0 with her second of the game with 22:39 to play and was followed 18 seconds later by Morgan for the 4-0 advantage.

Chloe Mangan stopped the Griffs run with her first of the game at the 19:14 mark, but Kotas answered with her third at 15:25 for the 5-1 Canisius lead. Morgan Leonard scored consecutive goals at 11:24 and 9:39, to push the Griffs lead to 7-1. Mangan scored her second for the Stags at the 2:07 mark to close the deficit to five, but Leonard scored with 15 ticks left to make the halftime score 8-2 Canisius.

Canisius scored the first two goals of the second-half to build its largest lead, 10-2 with 16:00 to play. Maeve Quinn started a three-goal Stag run with a goal 36 seconds later. Caitlin Townsend (14:28) and Jenna Slowey (11:31) finished the run to get Fairfield back within five, but the Stags would get no closer. Canisius scored three goals in the final 10 minutes to expand the lead back to eight, 13-5, and Amanda Best struck with 45 seconds to play for the final margin.

Mangan was the only Stags with multiple points, scoring twice. Katie Keenan took the loss in net, allowing six goals in 18:36 of action. Chelsey Sidaras made six stops and allowed seven goals, in her 41:24 in cage.

The Griffs were led by the four goals apiece of Leonard and Kotas. Kayla Scully earned the win for Canisius with a 12-save effort.

The Stags travel to Manhattan on Wednesday for a 7:00 pm MAAC contest, before closing out the regular season at home on April 20 with a non-conference game versus New Hampshire.

Canisius cruised to its school-record ninth-straight victory with a 13-6 win at Fairfield on Saturday. The Griffs also clinched at least a share of their first MAAC regular-season title with the win, taking the crown away from the Stags, who had won each of the last five regular-season championships. Canisius is now 11-3 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in MAAC play, while Fairfield drops to 8-7 and 3-2 against league foes.

The nine-game winning streak for Canisius tops the previous mark of eight, set during the 2011 season. A rematch of each of the last two MAAC Championships both won by Canisius the Griffs also handed Fairfield its first home loss in conference play since April 1, 2007, breaking the Stags' 19-game MAAC winning streak at Lessing Field.

"Today was a great team win," said Canisius head coach Scott Teeter. "We are playing our best lacrosse of the season right now and were excellent in all three areas of the field offense, defense and in transition. We continue to improve each day and I'm excited to see how far we can take this."

Senior Morgan Leonard (Sykesville, Md.) and junior Maria Kotas (Lancaster, N.Y.) both led the Griffs offense with four goals in the win. Senior Lindsey Morgan (Lancaster, N.Y.) and sophomore Whitley Perry (Adams Center, N.Y.) each added two tallies, while sophomore Meghan Cuddy (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal.

Sophomore Kayla Scully (Rodman, N.Y.) anchored a strong Canisius defense in the win, matching her career high with 12 saves for the Griffs. Leonard also recorded a game-high three caused turnovers as Canisius held its opponent to six or fewer goals in its sixth-straight game and for the eighth time this season.
